For example, a music video for say a Uber young audiences would have neon colors in its hues, loads of contrast, saturation, stylized funky fonts while a documentary more realistic colors used often (less color grd more color correction - there are exceptions to the rule obviously. ) Blue is a calm, soothing color for corporate medical videos hence different hues (Prussian, peacock, cyan, cobalt blue - slightly different moods but general message is for a more soothing vibe.

If character is looking right, he will be in rule of thirds framing with some space in right .. hence creating a look space. “Show don’t tell” was one of the first rules I learned in video production. You should be able to visually communicate your point, and an audience should be able to generally understand the message even in the absence of text, voiceover, etc. This is incredibly important now in the mobile media consumption age we’re in.

I’m going to speak about video intended to sell a product or service (since that’s mainly the kind of video I make). “Show don’t tell” also applies to the intended goal of what your target audience is meant to understand. For example: If you are creating an ad that is selling a product that can make your customer’s life better… don’t spend time telling your audience about all the different features your product has. There is a time and place for that, but you first need to SHOW how it makes your target audience’s life better. Telling information at your audience makes your product the hero and not the end user. Transitions on your video is the glue in your paper-mache. A Cross Dissolve will give a smooth feel. A Wipe or a Pan will give you a feel of moving forward or turning pages to the next. You can also create your own transitions by cutting just a little bit off of the end of one cut and beginning of another by using your favorite filter (what I do on FCP with the "Bad TV" filter). ALSO - if you're going for loops on social media... really think about if that fade out is helping or hurting!

The next time you sit down to watch a movie, pay attention to the transitions the editor employes. Every film contains hundreds or thousands of cuts and typically fewer than 6 or 8 other kinds of transitions. Follow that model.

I always say the heavy lifting for video production should be done in the very beginning stages, so if you're thinking of using transitions in your edit, think about how these can be done practically when you're in the principal photography stage.
