What is the best way to create a sheet metal fabrication model in CAD?

I found Solidworks to typically be the best option for 3D CAD sheet metal design as long as you have bend tolerance and material stretch lengths based on the type of bending presses and dies you have. Solidworks has generic settings for this but it’s best to calculate a bend table to make sure your bend lengths are correct when adding bends. Solidworks makes it easy to create a flat pattern from a simple CAD drawing, add bends, export files for CNC water jets, lasers and cutting machines, and produce drawings for the fabrication of accurate designs.

in mr experience, after creating desired shape by using polyline or rectangle command, convert it 3d view and then using extrude command giving its solid look and using 3drotate command for move any particuller part.

Personally, I used to Creo Parametric with sheet metal modelling. With some imported bend table, it can be flatten easily and export a dxf to factory for fabrication. Always the calculation and the fabrication is compatible. 😉

The best way is simple by being a master in SHeet metal in any 3d CAD like Solidworks, Creo, Nx or Catia V5 plus collaborative approach in Discussing the limitations in our design and SM drawings done with the production floor.These factors depend mainly on the level of SM bending and cutting machines available. Sometimes it has to be done in manual bending so we need to account these factors of workshops,Machines and capabilities available. The imp part of a 3d SM design is to provide the flat view with bend axis and its reference dimensions to accurately make the part .The cutouts and holes can be done accurately before in flat view before bending which are otherwise difficult in bending form. The versions of stamp/ die are advanced type.

Higher-end CAD programs like Autodesk Inventor (what I use), Fusion, or SolidWorks have sheet metal modules that let you choose to either model the part as-bent, or model it flat and then bend it, even feature by feature. The greatest cost-savings in these CAD programs is that they generate the flat-pattern for you once you finish your design, and they account for extra material in the bend (bend allowance) based on the material thickness. I've been exporting flat patterns to clients for years this way and we've created some pretty fancy parts. You can certainly model them as solids and try to figure out the bend allowance yourself, but this is really inefficient.

A few things to keep in mind: Holes and cuts close to the bend lines will distort. Special tooling can be used to prevent that but this will drive the price up. As a rule of thumb, don't go below 1 material thickness on the bend radius on soft materials (mild steel, aluminium) this will increase considerably in the case of hard materials such as Hardox. If the component is part of an assembly remember to account for ISSB and OSSB to prevent interferences.

To save money on your design, most competent sheet metal fabricators will have a list of there common available tooling, including common angles/bend radius's for different materials. While a simple part with 0-90° bends that have a large tolerance on bend radius are likely to be possible even on a simple hand operated sheet metal folding machine, for short productions runs, using optimising the design to suit common or available tool can save a reasonble amount of money. Talking through a part with your manufacturing team, and clarifying, minimum flange lengths, minmium distance to holes, and machines limitations can save you a lot of rework time and headaches.

Sheet Metal (SM) can be done in most 3D CAD like Catia V6,nx,Creo,Solidworks.Firstly, in the environment we have to set the settings for material thickness considering the material sheet available and design aspects of assembling.We can do many flexible designs with bends,cuts,flanges and dress up features like radius in the software.At the same time we should have an idea about the capability of our workshop sheet metal machines and how advanced they are.If we have advnaced SM machines we can design and consolidate our design.The flat feature is d most imp.Part bcos without this we cannot get developed view with bend lines axis in drawing.Other SM tools are punch and die.We shd hv also go and c hw these r done in shop fr perfect design.

I am at a sheet metal company and manufacture plenty sort of formed sheet metal parts. 90% in the cases, I don`t get proper 3D models, many people expects that their model is fine, but not for manufacturing. In Solidworks or in Solid edge, when someone doesn`t use sheet metal features it cause so much extra hours in flattening and with quotation process. Anyway if an easy part I quickly model 3D parts and calculate with bend deduction. I am not a fan of K factor.

Always talk to the guys on the floor, normally they would be pretty honest on what they think of the design. Calculations are good but sometimes thumb rule from a guy with 30 years of doing its business will work better.

Checking interfaces and errors plays a crucial role in creating sheet metal or 3D models. Once, I faced a situation where I needed to complete my project within the deadline, and in the middle, I faced an error due to urgency and deadline pressure how hard I tried, I failed in finding an error, but once I got back to basics and searched I found I that, I had a problem in interfaces. The thing I learned was, that during stressful situations, it's important to check at basics like collisions, interfaces, and also whether the sketch is fully defined or not.

Si vemos eso, será necesario corregir y ajustar el 3d para lograr un desarrollo limpio y sin interferencias. Y en todo caso, una vez que logramos el dxf podemos ajustarlo manualmente para que no haya problemas en el corte. En caso de que se complique ajustar el 3d, tenemos la opción de 'desdoblar' cierta parte del modelo, modificarla, y luego volver a plegarla conservando la modificación.

If the part is going to be manufactured by a supplier and you are just making the design you can skip the flat pattern in the drawing. The drawing acts as a contract with between you and the supplier and if there are inconsistencies in the flat pattern this can cause issues. You can create a flat pattern internally just to validate if the part is able to be manufactured at all.

Whatever cnc process used to cut your flat pattern, that software will require uploading a dxf. Once your sheet metal flat pattern is cut, print your dxf at 1:1 scale, and overlay your cut pattern for an easy inspection. Profile tolerances can be added to your dxf by a quick offset of the nominal edge of part. Lastly, create a dwg for your press brake operator. Transfer bend lines, direction of bend, angle of bend, bend radius, and distance.

After all the hard work is done, it's time for the production phase of your design. Creating the flat version of your work it's the final validation of all your time and effort put into your design.

El primer punto es, conocer las reglas del Diseño para la manufactura en chapa metálica, el software puede facilitar el modelado de las piezas metálicas, pero que un software facilite no significa que sea manufacturable, a veces las condiciones default no son las más adecuadas y hay que revisar todas las condiciones y cambiarlas como sea necesario, hay que seleccionar los radios de dobles adecuados tomando en cuenta las herramientas de dobles disponible, seleccionar el factor k de acuerdo al material y espesor, al momento de diseñar hay que colocar los desahogos de dobles, tomar en cuenta las reglas de separación de cortes, e indicar el postproceso necesario, ejemplo rellenar con soldadura donde se crearon desahogos.

Creating any model, let alone sheet metal, had to start with an understanding of the design intent - Material condition, boundary condition, and Load condition. Presuming we are planning to use Sheet metal, to meet the design intent, the features -flanges, bends, welds, holes, cuts, chamfer, louvers, emboss, gussets, jog, hem, etc- need to be understood. The purpose of adding these features to the design is to be rationalized (e.g. adding a gusset for strengthening & and patterned cutouts for ventilation). Perform flat pattern to investigate issues. Lastly, any features specific to the machines must be added(e.g. tooling hole for Progressive die). This all would ensure a sheet metal CAD model that is manufacturable per available facility.

I have found prototyping with cardstock and thin gauge aluminum (cheap roof flashing) to be valuable for sheet metal design. I can visually try different bend arrangements with some scissors, and a straight edge, and get to a final configuration quickly. Then refine the design with your CAD tools. Also, take some time to talk to a sheet metal fabricator. They will have a unique perspective and give practical design ideas.
