Here are some tips to help you design and deliver a relevant and effective program.

1 Assess your industry context

Before you start developing your program, you need to understand the context of your industry. What are the current and emerging issues, opportunities, and threats that affect your industry? How is your industry changing in terms of technology, regulation, competition, customer expectations, and social impact? What are the skills, competencies, and mindsets that leaders need to succeed in your industry? You can use various tools and methods to conduct an industry analysis, such as SWOT, PESTEL, Porter's five forces, and scenario planning. The more you know about your industry, the better you can align your program with its needs and goals.

As markets are dynamic with technology disrupting most industries, I recommend doing a SWOT & competitive analysis every 6 months. Additionally, if your industry has any major annual research reports that come out - make sure to get access to those and read them.

After you have assessed your industry context, you need to define your leadership vision and values. What kind of leaders do you want to develop for your industry? What are the core values and principles that guide your leadership culture and practices? How do you want your leaders to behave, communicate, and collaborate with others? How do you measure and reward your leadership performance and impact? You can use various tools and methods to define your leadership vision and values, such as vision statements, value propositions, core values, and leadership frameworks. The more you clarify your leadership vision and values, the better you can align your program with your desired outcomes.

What are the specific topics, themes, and skills that you want to cover in your program? How do you tailor your program content to the unique challenges and opportunities of your industry? How do you balance the theoretical and practical aspects of your program? How do you deliver your program in a way that suits the preferences and needs of your learners? You can use various tools and methods to customize your program content and delivery, such as learning objectives, curriculum design, instructional methods, learning activities, and evaluation methods. The more you customize your program content and delivery, the better you can align your program with your learners' expectations and experiences.

4 Engage your industry stakeholders

Finally, you need to engage your industry stakeholders. Who are the key people and groups that influence or are influenced by your leadership development program? How do you involve them in the design, delivery, and evaluation of your program? How do you leverage their insights, feedback, and support to improve your program? Keep in mind that once you do the analysis/assessment exercise, you will identify what skills and traits are needed to succeed in your specific industry and you can then work w internal partners and/or external experts to build the training program that will best suit your needs.
