One of the major challenges is changing mindset of the workforce, especially if the organization is a few years into the Cloud migration journey. Software engineers need to change their thinking of developing software from on-prem to developing Cloud native applications and think distributed performance, and components that can individually scale. That means, architecting the solution that can scale from the start (it shouldn't be an after thought). Use persistent caching (Redis etc) instead of sessions, CDNs to serve media/images or contents, microservices that can scale independently based on load etc.

However, this requires a major investment in architecture design and decomposition of the existing application, significant development effort, new technologies and skillset such as containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines and also restructuring of the organization in order to be able to build and support the new architecture in an agile way. On the other hand, adopting a serverless architecture minimizes the technical effort but has some drawbacks as well such as difficult cloud vendor switching, loss of hardware control and challenging debugging.

What is more difficult is to have zero downtime in you cloud environment. When purchasing your cloud services - read the fine print, get an estimate for the cost of zero (planned and unplanned) downtime and make sure your business is comfortable with the cost.

Big clouds Serverless is good for small projects. Then it saves the costs. "Medium" project will have first cost problems which will show you how much more expensive the Cloud is. Just check how much PostgreSQL server on AWS costs... !!!!! And think how many servers you can rent for that money. If you target huge project, you need to think seriously about Bare Metal Servers hosting centers like before the big clouds. Use Bare Metal Kubernetes. Here are 2 possible roads to go - KNative Serverless, Or old good Kubernetes Services with load balancing, Spring Boot GraalVM Docker containers, Kafka, Redis, mongodb. In any case, you will have to rework all your software to modern technologies. It's 2 years of hard work. Of new hires too.

This is something a lot of large firms miss out on as the compute, scale of data and server hits are all outsourced on one platform, this leads to a security concern of 1) Increased cost by the cloud providers. 2) Cloud Providers service outage. 3) Data wipe out issues when unmanaged properly ( Recent insurance data wipe that had 130 billion Dollar worth data).
