Availability issues can have negative impacts on the user experience, customer satisfaction, revenue, reputation, and compliance of a system. For example, if an online store is unavailable during a peak shopping season, it can lose potential customers, sales, and trust. To prevent or mitigate availability issues, solution architects need to design systems that are resilient, scalable, redundant, and fault-tolerant.

To measure the availability of a system, solution architects need to use metrics that quantify the percentage of time that the system is operational and functional. One of the most common metrics is availability, which is calculated as the ratio of uptime to total time. Another common metric is service level agreement (SLA), which is a contract between a service provider and a customer that specifies the minimum level of availability that the service provider guarantees. A related metric is service level indicator (SLI), which is a measure of how well the service provider meets the SLA.
