What are the common causes and prevention strategies for fires in the lab?

One thing I have learned from a number of Safety Trainings I had attended is the use of appropriate containers in packaging these flammable fluids and care must also be taken in ensuring that there are no leakages on these containers. Compatibility of the packaging material and the flammable liquid must also be taken into consideration as practicing safe science is the sole responsibility of laboratory personnels and as such it should not be undermined or taken for granted.

Conduct regular leak checks, inspections, and maintenance of gas delivery systems and equipment.

Bunsen burners left on! This is a very common occurrence in labs that can lead to any number of situations. Should be checked for after hours!

Make sure lab staff knows about different fire extinguisher types! Have been in situations where someone is trying to put out a metallic fire with an ABC extinguisher!

Propping doors open to go out to smoke a quick cigarette - a safety and security problem that never seems to go away! Have had laptop thieves walk in through propped open doors - with proprietary information on the laptops - that was not supposed to be there! A different way of getting 'smoked'!
