Many years ago I taught English conversation in Japan to managers and executives at Honda and Toyota manufacturing. Their goal was to prepare for production assignments overseas. My responsibilities took on multiple levels from grammar and expression (greetings, basic needs and necessities) to succinct, nuanced expressions of intent and purpose at higher levels. At all levels, as a teacher, I felt it was important for me to present myself as a kind of typical model for the people my students would likely encounter. This meant understanding their ultimate employment assignments and goals, and doing my best to tailor the class to their needs. I did my best to include custom materials in addition to textbook learning.

As above, the knowledge of one's audience is paramount here too - there are so many different potential audience cultures and customs, and vastly different "rules" for reach - oftentimes one culture's set of rules conflicting with those of a different culture. Teaching such a high level of formality and many words and phrases an ESL learner may not have encountered before and that are not your typical conversational English provides its own complexity to the education. Learning social skills is, IMO, of paramount importance. That is something I often see seglected. All the learning, no matter the subject matter, is foccused on acquiring academic skills. What good does the information do if you cannot convey it with a touch of 'proper' social interaction. In diplomacy, you can even start a war.
