What do you do if you encounter complex problem solving scenarios in Cloud Computing?

When encountering complex scenarios in Cloud Computing, I approach them methodically. Firstly, I break down the problem into smaller, more manageable components to better understand its intricacies. Next, I leverage data-driven analysis and employ various problem-solving frameworks, such as root cause analysis or the 5 Whys technique, to identify underlying issues and potential solutions. I collaborate with cross-functional teams, drawing on diverse perspectives & expertise to brainstorm innovative approaches. Prototyping allows me to test hypotheses and iterate towards optimal solutions. Throughout the process, I maintain clear communication with stakeholders, providing regular updates and soliciting feedback to ensure transparency.

I think there is a lot to be said for just taking a step back and looking at everything holistically. Once you get an idea of all the overall pieces included in a solution, then you can kind of chunk it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. This allows you to take a much more methodical approach to your troubleshooting as well as the benefit of really understanding how each piece fits together. You might also find new things to troubleshoot you hadn’t noticed at first glance.

In cloud computing, most hard hit problems are those that are underlying infra related. Considering the private cloud scenario, the underlying cloud infra is managed by cloud platform team and app development teams are deploying their apps and services on the provided cloud infra. App teams know about their apps and services, but when any infra related issues are from the underlying cloud infra, then app teams are clueless and they struggle to conclude whether it's an infra issue or their app issue. To solve these nightmares, the cloud infra team should have proper monitors and alerting mechanisms, so that most of the underlying infra related issues are monitored and app teams do not struggle to identify the cause of an app misbehaviour.

When encountering complex problem-solving scenarios in Cloud Computing, it's crucial to break down the issue into manageable parts and leverage both technical expertise and creative thinking. For instance, during a cloud migration project, I faced unexpected compatibility issues between legacy systems and the new cloud environment. Instead of panicking, I approached the problem methodically, conducting thorough research and consulting with subject matter experts. Use techniques such as the 5 Whys, fishbone diagrams or fault tree analysis to systematically trace the issue back to its origin.

Good cloud based password managers alert users of security risks. -Handling data encryption during migration -Setting up networks in the target cloud for operations -Managing services in the target cloud ecosystem. -Configure network hardware and install the latest software updates to prevent security vulnerabilities. -Hire Cloud professionals with specializations in DevOps and automation to make it more efficient. -Creating data management and privacy policies is a starting point when it comes to managing multi cloud environments effectively.

In my experience, researching solutions for complex cloud issues typically starts with a deep dive into AWS documentation and FAQs, which are rich with detailed guidance. I often look for similar scenarios and resolutions in community forums like AWS, Post or Stack Overflow, where many practitioners share their hands-on solutions. Parsing through error logs meticulously, especially in AWS CloudWatch, helps identify the root cause. Sometimes, AWS Trusted Advisor can be a silent hero, pointing out best practices and optimizations. And when things get tricky, AWS Support is the go-to for their expertise and swift problem resolution.

In complex cloud computing scenarios, I follow a structured approach: understand the problem, research solutions, consult experts, experiment, iterate, document solutions, implement monitoring, and review for continuous improvement.

First step: Asking the cloud providers’ community about the issues. There can be like minded people who went through the same issue and researched. Second Step: After properly evaluating issue, try to go with the official documentation to find out the difference in the config or development flow.

Look for: - a SaaS offering - if that doesn't fit ask if the SaaS provider has the features you need in their beta, if not offer to sign NDA and contribute to beta. - if nothing is remotely close then look for a PaaS offering.

My process would be objective .. work backwards.. try to understand how different systems are interacting to produce a result .. what is that result and what is stopping the systems to produce that result. With this context dive into different systems interacting in that complex problem .. take a pick based on my experience .. for eg. If I think it’s done network problem which can be cause .. I dig deep in network logs and information till I find a clue .. based on my experiences I reject the most favored ones first .. and keep iterating.

As the first step, I suggest attempting to reproduce the error in every possible scenario. These will serve as the test cases for validating our fixes to the solution. Hypotheses are formed based on the knowledge acquired during the process of exploring various use cases.

Security: steps to mitigate the risk of a data breach. 1st, we implemented a strong password policy. This required users to create passwords that were at least 12 characters long and included a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. We also enforced password expiration, so users were required to change their passwords every 90 days. Second, we used two-factor authentication (2FA) for all users. This required users to provide two pieces of information to authenticate themselves, such as a password and a code sent to their phone. Third, we encrypted all data at rest and in transit. We also monitored our cloud environment for suspicious activity. This included monitoring for unauthorized access, changes to data, and deleted files

Testing a problem in a cloud environment follows a similar approach to local debugging, leveraging the monitoring and tracking tools provided by the cloud platform, By meticulously tracing each step of the process, analyzing collected data, and validating assumptions, one can efficiently identify and address issues.

Before we start anything, we must understand how the whole application is architected, both in terms of its high level and low level architecture. This would give us understanding what are the different components in the systems and how they interact with each other. Given these we should clarity on the requirements ( if we are building something new ) or get business context ( on something that is already existing). Once we gather these, we would want to clarify the availability, latency, data requirements, location and scale of users on this app. Given all these, we can start working with other points mentioned above.

This may involve adjusting configurations, deploying test environments, or simulating specific scenarios. • Iterate and Refine: Based on the results of your tests, iterate on your hypotheses, refining them as you gather more data. This may involve making configuration changes, applying software patches, adjusting resource allocations, or reaching out to cloud service providers for assistance.

When faced with challenging cloud computing problem-solving situations, I would take an organised approach: examine the issue, break down it into manageable chunks, anticipate into possible fixes, confer with experts or colleagues as needed, test ideas, and refine iteratively until an acceptable solution is discovered.

Consider factors such as resource utilization, licensing fees, and potential savings from optimization efforts. - Ensure that any proposed solutions comply with relevant regulations and security best practices. - Implement robust change management practices to track and control changes to your cloud environment.
