As a software engineer, I've learned that rushing into code without fully understanding the problem can waste time and lead to less effective solutions. Asking questions helps clarify the task and shows a systematic problem-solving approach, a key skill in software development. This step is vital for avoiding mistakes caused by incorrect assumptions that could derail your solution.

Before attending the software development interview, you should conduct research on the organisation and the technologies most commonly used there. Also, keep in mind that before the software development interview, you should practise some coding challenges on Leetcode and HackerRank. The next stage is to answer the code challenge. If you already know the solution, telling the interviewer is a good thing. Next, whether you know the solution to the problem or not, ask clarifying questions to understand the context. Then, write code using the brute force method. Getting feedback from an interviewer is quite crucial. If you solve the problem before the final time, think about the various edge cases and try to reduce time complexity.

When encountering a coding challenge during an interview, the initial step should be to thoroughly understand the problem and seek clarification through questions. Once you have clear understanding of the problem, think about which DS/algo will be best suited, any design patterns that can be used (specifically during design interviews), what best practises to use. Then talk through your solution with the interviewer, always remember interviewers are there to help you.

Clean, modular code that adheres to language conventions and standards should take precedence. Unit tests, debuggers, and commenting on your logic all contribute to its lucidity and dependability. Most interviewers are looking at much more than if you successfully completed the challenge. I’ve interviewed about 150 engineers. About 2/3 of them complete the code challenges I give them. The engineers that stand out don’t always complete the task within the time window, but they share common behaviors: • Stand-out engineers think out loud in these interviews and explain their thought process. This helps me, the interviewer, understand their reasoning. • Stand-out engineers can answer technical questions and reason about their programs, like Big-O complexity. • Stand-out engineers acknowledge if they’re making compromises in order to meet time requirements.

Writing code while people watch is difficult at first, especially when you know people are judging you on the basis of it. But like the interview itself, the coding challenge is a kind of performance. So as well as practising writing code quickly on demand, you may also find it helpful to practice your performance skills more generally. I found skills I learned performing music helped with this. You may find giving technical talks or public speaking help, for example. The ability to manage your anxiety, manage mistakes without panicking, pace yourself and keep a connection with your audience throughout are all skills which will help. The idea is to let people see who you are, and how you do things, in spite of how nervous you may be.
