What do you do if new teachers are struggling to respond to failure?

Obtaining Ph.D from IISc, Bangalore and 3 years of post-doctoral experience in UK and Germany; I joined as 'Reader' in Mechanical Engineering at a newly founded Engineering College. I was allotted 'Engineering Mechanics' ( Statics and Dynamics) to teach to fresh students. I was initially hesitant to take up this subject because it was and still is considered to be the most difficult subject to teach to freshers. A senior Professor was teaching the same subject to freshers of Civil Engineering Department. I requested him to permit me to attend his classes and take down notes. He magnanimously permitted. It helped me in learning the proper sequence, what type of problems and examples to give, how to draw neat diagrams and art of teaching.

Reconozca que todos los educadores se han enfrentado a desafíos similares y que estos momentos son oportunidades para el crecimiento y el aprendizaje.

Teachers play a crucial role in everyone's life, but it's tough for newcomers to adapt to new things and the environment. It's normal to face setbacks, but what matters most is how they move forward. New teachers should have a good mentor because experienced ideas are invaluable. Each outstanding teacher has their unique way of teaching. For instance, Teacher A might explain the law of gravity one way, while Teacher B does it differently. New teachers should discover their strengths and what makes them unique. Continuous learning, different ways of delivering content, analyzing feedback, staying positive, and seeking advice from senior mentors will greatly help them overcome failure.

Characteristics of a good teacher: 1. Must have command over the subject, love the subject and live with it 24 x 7. 2. Must have excellent communication skills (Oral, written, Spoken and Listening). 3. Lecture in class room should flow like a river. 4. Must go to the class fully prepared to lecture for 100 minutes for a 50 minutes lecture (More than enough material). 5. Must tell a story or two about great scientists relevant to the subject. 6. Should have 360 degree view of the class (Should know what is happening in the class when using the black board). 7. Must have eye to eye contact with the students while delivering the lecture. 8. Should be able to read from facial expression of students whether they are understanding or not. 9. 10

Totalmente de acuerdo, todos tenemos esa posibilidad por diferentes razones, pero es asi. En mi experiencia he pasado situaciones que me quedo en blanco o no puedo conectar y asi es como nos sentimos.. rechazada, frustrada y avergonzada. Pero el primer paso es reconocer y analizar que podemos hacer mejor.

Algo que aclarar que no solo los nuevos, sino también los experimentados docentes también tienen situaciones de rechazos. Y siempre buscar apoyo es reconfortante y recibir consejos también.

Feeling overwhelmed and confused as a new teacher is totally normal. It's so important to have a mentor or a colleague that you can trust to guide you through your early teaching career. This helps you plan accordingly, prepare yourself physically and emotionally, and most important, not burden yourself and later on burn yourself out too early.

Encourage them by telling them that failure is a part of success. Advice them to attend seminars, hold discussions with their colleagues

En nuestra experiencia después de evaluar y analizar las causas internas y externas, busco la estrategia para que no vuelva a pasarme, y los resultados son excelentes. Por algo dicen que no hay mal que por bien no venga.. tal como en la vida todo pasa por que debemos aprender algo.

Having a mentor, a colleague, or just a friend that you trust (preferably in the same field) will help you understand that sometimes whatever you are going through, other teachers have gone through too. So find someone that you can confide in and open up to honestly to help validate your feelings, support your work, and most importantly, continue to motivate you to better serve your students.

Cher Thomas Edison grâce à lui l’échec est une somme de victoires. On aurait du mal à vivre dans le noir sans ampoules électriques ! Comment trouver des solutions sans échecs? Comment développer des stratégies sans échecs? Comment connaître la saveur de la victoire sans avoir connu l’échec? Comment remédier sans échec? L’échec est toujours partiel sauf si on en vit ni la valeur ni la profondeur. A mi échec mi victoire. Donc rien n’est perdu.

As an educator, I believe that failure is an opportunity for growth and improvement. Adaptability is key in finding what works best for both me and my students.

Teaching may just be a job for some but only the strongest stay. It is that strength and resilience that will help you persevere in your career. Understand that failure is also a part of learning and as teachers we also need to be "teachable". Remember to learn from those failed moments.

The onboarding process needs to be flexible and carried out in a simultaneous manner that allows new teachers to settle in well in their job. However, there is a place or learning on the job which requires that teachers continuous partake in professional development training to improve their competence and become better.

Teachers need to remember to always be "teachable". Continuous learning will not only help you better understand your paths as a teacher but it will also help you to navigate through those paths. Attend workshops, read books, there are even tons of videos you can watch online and on social media platforms. Just keep on learning.
