What do you do if a student in your class is being bullied?

I have a conversation with the student to get all the details. Once I do that, I talk with the Administration to get them involved. Once the Administration gets inovlved, we have a conversation with the parents of both students. This open dialogue will help us get a better understand of what is going on and why.

When dealing with bullying in my classroom, I prioritize swift intervention and open communication to address the issue effectively. If I observe signs of bullying such as verbal attacks, exclusion, or changes in behavior among my students, I initiate a conversation with the student who is being bullied to gather details about the situation. Following this, I involve the administration to ensure appropriate support and intervention measures are implemented. Engaging in open dialogue with the parents of both the bullied student and the bully allows us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation and work collaboratively towards resolution.

Often teachers also start laughing at stupid jokes and become part of the bullying culture. It is important to look for signs if a certain student is constantly targeted by others. Check if there is name-calling, rudeness, exclusions towards a particular student(s). Also check for response of that student, if you observe emotional changes, decline in student's academic performance, signs of any injury then it probably is a victim of bullying.

Always take time to listen to the student who is being bullied. Validate their feelings and let them know that you take their concerns seriously. Ignoring to listen might make the kid feel lonely and this would increase the fear.

A humanização e a empatia é algo que deve ser abordado e discutido nas Instituições de ensino, e principalmente em casa pelos pais. Precisamos realizar simpósios, palestras que levem essas palavras mais a serio para que possamos trabalhar da melhor forma em nossos alunos.

As an educator, it's a responsibility to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all learners. It has come to my attention that an incident of bullying occurred in my classroom. I addressed it promptly and effectively by approaching the bullies making it clear that it's unacceptable and against the values we uphold in my classroom. I met with both parties parents to discuss, monitor and ensure that this will not happen again. I approached the guidance councilor to provide support as well. Together, we can create an environment where every student feels valued, respected and safe.

An example, was when my daughter of a ( Black Heritage) was being picked on at her school and was called a monkey and this white children were mimicking an African accent whenever she speaks. As a parent that was painful to hear as you can imagine because I didn't know about it happening to my daughter. I took action, contacted other ethnic minority family members from the school to see if their children were experiencing similar. Once I gathered enough evidence, I approached the school Head and asked for a meeting, raised a formal complaint and from my complaint the school were able to look at how things would improve. Am I satisfied with the outcomes no but at least it brought the issue about Racism up. Take whatever legal action.

The student needs to know that you care. By speaking to whole class about the effects of bullying on the victim as well as the perpetrators you will be showing effective leadership. I wrote the poem below about bullies. Bullies at home. Bullies at work. Bullies on the streets. Bullies in their cars. They push past everyone because they think everyone owe them defference. Blind, or ignorant to the needs of others it is their way or no way. Bullies in fine clothes. Bullies in high office. Bullies, and they think not that they are Bullies.

Having a full-time counsellor at school is often very helpful to address the victims of bullying. Such students can also be provided with opportunities to perform and excel so that they are kept motivated and not lose their interest in school. Also encouraging peer support can be very handy. There is often a group of student volunteers to maintain discipline like prefects. Such students can also be given the tasks of supporting and protecting victims of bullying in places school staff might not be present like sports fields, cafeteria, corridors etc.

Recovery process from bullying is key. It determines if there will be permanent solution or recurrence of the problem. I am aware that there have been incidences of my peers around the world who took their lives because of bullying. This should not happen. If the system is fixed. This too helps. By system, i'm talking about the protocols for identifying bullying situations up to the solution of the same. Bullying should not be left to fester. It is a very delicate communication of a breakdown in the structures of a society, whether from home or in the school or in the community as a whole!

El acosador necesita una intervención profesional. Ya que la estructura psíquica que ha ido construyendo le impedirá percibir los sentimientos y acciones hostiles que despliega como perjudiciales y dañinos. Cuando se naturaliza ese modo de accionar, es difícil que se reconozca el perjuicio que se genera y las consecuencias que tienen esos patrones de conducta en los otros. Además del daño que se genera a sí mismo al ignorar las habilidades emocionales como la empatia, la consideración y la compasión. Have a positive counseling on the bully and acknowledge and reward the bully if he or she exhibits any positive behavioral change

To cultivate a positive school climate and combat bullying, it's essential to engage in collaborative efforts within the school community. Modeling and teaching positive behaviors like cooperation, communication, and collaboration are foundational steps. Providing opportunities for students to interact and form bonds through group projects, games, or clubs fosters a sense of belonging and connection. Additionally, involving students in the creation and enforcement of anti-bullying rules and norms empowers them to take ownership of their school culture. Recognizing and celebrating each other's strengths and achievements further promotes a supportive environment where kindness and respect prevail.

Criar um ambiente de clima positivo em uma escola para combater o bullying são objetivos importantes que requerem um esforço colaborativo de toda a comunidade escolar. Algumas atividades que podem auxiliar nesse processo são: a conscientização através de palestras, rodas de conversa e dinâmicas de vivências, para desenvolvimento da empatia. O estabelecimento de regras claras e políticas de tolerância zero contra o bullying, com consequências claras e consistentes para os agressores. E principalmente a promoção da inclusão e da diversidade em todos os dias na rotina do ambiente escolar, este deve ser um tema transversal, conversar e positivar as diferenças culturais, étnicas, religiosas, de gênero e outras dentro da escola.

Criar um ambiente positivo e combater o bullying são processos contínuos que exigem comprometimento e trabalho conjunto de toda a comunidade escolar. Outras ações relevantes sobre esse tema são: o envolvimento dos responsáveis, tornando as famílias um apoio na promoção de um ambiente escolar seguro e positivo. Criar um ambiente de estimulo a denúncia de vítimas e agressores e o fornecimento de apoio emocional para alunos que tenham sido vítimas de bullying ou que estejam passando por dificuldades emocionais.

It is also vital that students are provided safe and confidential reporting mechanisms where not only the victim can report the problem, but other students who might know or have witnessed bullying can report without having their identities compromised. This can increase the effectiveness of school's efforts to timely recognize cases and take corrective measures.

If a student is verbally bullied, that person can choose to ignore whatever was said, and walk away. Another possible response to verbal bullying is to turn whatever was said to the student back on the bully such as saying that the bully is "stupid" when the bullied student is called "stupid," and again walking away. If the bullying is physical abuse, the bullied student needs to learn self defense tactics such as boxing, karate, other martial arts, etc. The bullied student should also be told that it is actually the bully who has a serious problem and not the bully's target. The bully is acting out an antisocial tendency while trying to dominate and get some aberrant ego satisfaction.
