What do you do if sustainable fashion is in high demand and you're a fashion designer?

Unfortunately, industries must parse and define their business/product specifically "sustainable", as it would seem to be a most obvious objective intrinsic for living and lifestyle in general. Fortunately, Awareness is rising. Choosing to be transparent is seriously factored into progressive businesses practices. Finding the right position within such companies is rewarding, wherein one advertently promotes collaborative commitment to output of things: that are durable, healthy for humans & environment, combined with innovative product life-cycle & re-cycling plans. As a designer of apparel - sourcing & developing fabrics, materials, manufacturers, & processes leading to final garments - is the approach I prefer to take.

As a fashion designer responding to the high demand for sustainable fashion, I prioritize sourcing eco-friendly materials and implementing ethical manufacturing practices. This involves partnering with suppliers committed to sustainability, reducing waste through innovative design, and ensuring transparency across the supply chain. I would also focus on creating timeless pieces to promote durability and longevity, reducing the overall environmental impact. Engaging with the community and educating consumers about sustainable fashion choices are crucial to driving the industry forward. This approach aligns with market demand and reinforces my commitment to ethical and sustainable fashion practices.

All points are good. The most important thing to be sustainable is to be honest. If you're not honest about the value of your product you cannot be sustainable.

The Hidden Environmental Costs of "Sustainable" Fashion The fashion industry's push for sustainability has seen denim manufacturers tout laser technology as an eco-friendly solution. While reducing water and chemical usage, the emissions from laser printing are often overlooked. This "greenwashing" conceals the true environmental impact, eroding consumer trust. Transparency and accountability are essential to ensure genuine sustainability in fashion.

Unfortunately, on many occasions, although brands advertise their products as environmentally friendly, sustainable and free of exploitation and animal cruelty, this is a sales concept and the average customer who consumes products in a local store has no way of verifying that these statements are true

This may seem counter intuitive but go to as many sourcing shows and see as many talks as possible. Sustainable sourcing changes quickly, it’s now no longer viewed as sustainable to make fabric out of recycled plastic bottles. Sourcing strategies should be long term and driven by the product team, so get as much information as possible and collaborate with your supply chain. It may be more sustainable to have a virgin product from a mill that uses renewable energy and recycled water.

The sustainable textile industry is booming. In Europe especially Finland, we are making textiles from recycled wood pulp. In India, leather is made from banana fibers and much more. Stay current, network and work with textile experts, and find suppliers who believe in sustainability as much as you.

Be smart and updated about industry norms and certifications when it comes to sourcing. Please always dive deep, and ask for transparency from your suppliers. Include cultural parameters while sourcing from countries with an ancient textile heritage and endeavour to protect it.

Source organic cotton, recycled polyester, linen, hemp, and other sustainable materials. Research innovative fabrics like Tencel or Piñatex made from recycled wood pulp or pineapple leaves

When it comes to sustainability the fashion industry is moving toward a new destination. But still the sustainable meters are limited, as designers what can be done is going for timeless fashion and up cycling the designs.

The very definition of of fashion is conflicting with longevity of wear. While it can’t be helped due to consumer demand, having a mix of products that have multiple uses is essential. Example basic pants within the mix that customer love to wear.

Create timeless pieces that transcend fleeting trends. Focus on quality craftsmanship and classic silhouettes that will stay relevant for seasons to come.

With the fashion world so focused on trends, design for your ideal customer. There is always an audience for a product, the question is who is yours? Once you design for a specific person with a specific lifestyle your job becomes easy, it becomes easy to market and of course, your designs become timeless as that kind of person will continue to exist even though fashion trends change.

Your design approach will determine how many resources your brand uses. Smart design starts with versatility. Can one product cater to different needs? Can patterns be made more effective to avoid garment cut-offs? Can we create products that will outlast rapid fads and trend cycles? Can you make your products circular? These are important questions to consider while designing a product.

Solving challenges more efficiently. Explore techniques and process, blend old and new and create solutions that are useful to your customer

As a designer, you must continuously seek out new materials, techniques, and processes that reduce environmental impact. This could include adopting digital fabrication methods that minimize waste or developing textiles from unconventional sources like agricultural byproducts. Examples of no-waste techniques include reusing vintage silk scarves, designing garment patterns that leave minimal offcuts, and employing seamless knitwear designs, such as those seen in Issey Miyake's A-POC collection, where garments are knitted directly into shape, significantly cutting down on material waste. Embracing these innovative approaches positions you as a leader in sustainable design.

Consumer education in my opinion is the first and most important part of building a sustainable fashion industry. I've spent a lot of my personal time educating friends, family, and strangers about how their clothes are produced...and hopefully they enjoyed the discussion as much as they claimed! For those of us in the industry it does fall upon us to inform others how they end up with their clothes so that they are able to understand how sustainable efforts affect price points. It takes a savvy shopper to identify greenwashing - the efforts around educating the public about this in Europe are very impressive. Until the US makes the same effort, every one of us can help those around us who care make better decisions.

With the proliferation of smartphones, social media, driving consumer consciousness becomes easy. Using social media platforms to spur debate around sustainable fashion. This way consumers across the world share ideas, get informed and in the long-run make purchase decisions that are eco friendly. Discussions should not be limited to eco fashion directly. For instance a debate on consumerism culture could indirectly spur change, which indirectly impacts sustainability agenda.

By focusing on women's agency in shaping their lives and choices, they're less susceptible to mainstream aesthetics, reducing fast fashion consumption.

Fashion trends keep repeating even after decades, the only thing is they return with slight variations. Just think ahead of time and then design accordingly.
