What do you do if you want to enhance your technical writing skills in Aerospace Engineering?

It would be a great learning experience! First I'll learn the basics of Aerospace engineering, and document my learnings. This would create the basis for my technical writing. Then I will reach out to SMEs, ask questions, research and keep on writing and sharing what I learn.

Artificial Intelligence tools like Perplexity AI are now essential in research and new learning. Perplexity streamlines learning basic concepts and attributes sources to diminish hallucinations. During research, read papers and documents to better understand how to structure information for different levels of expertise.

Understanding the field of application is important, but technical communicators also need to be familiar with the research-based principles of effective communication. Effective technical communication requires the same kind of study as any other profession demands.

Even better if you can get first hand experience talking with engineers on the production floor to develop a better understanding of the product you're helping write about in addition to learning from your peers' experience writing in the field over the years.

Don't go into any industry that you are unfamiliar with trying to be a generalist who learns everything. There's just too much to learn, in any industry. By the time you gain general knowledge in any subject, the industry and technology move on. Spending too much time learning generalities, instead of being productive writing content, is a waste of your and your employer's time and resources. The best way to learn while being productive is to pick a specific details to document, a part or concept, and make a documentation project out of it. Show your usefulness and willingness to pay attention to and learn the details. As you continue deep learning into more details, your general knowledge also builds.

Practice conveying complex ideas concisely and clearly. In technical writing, being concise is crucial to ensure that readers can grasp the information efficiently.

Being able to understand terminology in the field is very important, as well as understanding the code languages you may need to truly succeed in the field (ex. SGML or XML). Developing these skills takes time. Try not to be too hard on yourself as you learn. Take notes, take your time. When I was hired for my first technical writing job, I was told it took around 3 months to learn and a year to get good at. I fully agree with this. There is no substitute for sitting down and doing.

Understand your audience, from engineers to project managers or regulators, and adjust your language and details accordingly. For non-experts, explain concepts clearly and limit jargon. For specialists, precise technical terms are suitable. Gauge the audience’s knowledge to set the right information depth and style. If you ever want to improve your technical writing skills I challenge you to take a recent work example or problem and just start trying to explain it as if to a new hire. Write internal memos to yourself when you finally figured something out as it will help you later if you forget and it can also be shared with others who can benefit from the knowledge share. Writing <1000 word memos can help maintain the technical writing as it’s a balance of too much detail and too little. You also are trying to keep relevant info only since technical writing is already long as it is.

Finished work needs to illustrate an understanding of nuances unique to the aerospace industry while taking into consideration many customers have both aerospace and automotive divisions.
