What do you do if you want to launch a thriving nonprofit leadership consulting business?

The best advice I can give is: Read the signs! Decades ago, volunteer leaders and others would confide in me that they, their church, favorite npo, etc., are considering a capital campaign. They'd ask me if I was interested however, I had a full-time position and in the middle of another capital campaign. And if they lost confidence in their campaign consultant, again, I would get a call or visit. Next, get your credentials for certification and/or a master's degree in a related field (mine is in Philanthropy & Development). Publish articles or a book; accept invitations to speak at conferences, and, above all else, remember to say "Thank you!" to those who have referred someone to contact you. Love this field!

Here, I'd also ask yourself: What do you enjoy? What lights you up? Find the overlap between what nonprofits need and what you enjoy. Starting your own business is hard work, harder still if you don't like what you're doing. If you're not intentional, you can end up building the same job you left.

This could be in areas like organizational development, fundraising strategies, board governance, or leadership coaching. Narrowing down your focus helps you target your services more effectively.

Genuine enthusiasm for the charity sector and a dedication to having a good influence are crucial. Having practical experience in consulting or leadership positions inside nonprofits may provide you a lot of credibility and priceless insights. Good Interpersonal and Communication Skills would equip you to establish relationships with clients, explain difficult concepts clearly, and lead fruitful conversations.

Your ability to offer practical answers that are suited to their particular requirements as a consultant is priceless. By concentrating on producing observable results, you show that you are devoted to their success and position yourself as a trustworthy collaborator.

Here's my reflections 6 months in: -It's ~25% more busy and work but 90% less stressful than being a Co-ED. -The professional network you built over years will help when they can -Take meetings with other consultants and accept their help when it's offered. -Take networking meetings even if you don't know what they are about. -Say yes to collaborations, even if you aren't ready to take them on right then. -Trust in what you know, and continue to produce relevant content even if no one is engaging it yet. -Build your crew, find a group of peer consultants to check in with like when you had a staff team.
