What do you do if you want to secure additional benefits or perks in your salary package?

I take the time to research industry standards for my role and level of experience, giving me a solid benchmark for what's reasonable to ask for. Reflecting on my specific contributions and achievements, I gather the evidence needed to justify my request for additional benefits or compensation. When it comes time to articulate these points, I focus on how my performance directly supports the company's objectives. This level of preparation not only showcases my professionalism but also sets the stage for a meaningful discussion about my worth to the organization.

The demands for higher compensation need to be backed with proper achievement, certificate, skills that are essential, worthwhile to the organisation in order for negotiation.

When seeking additional benefits, research industry standards and comparable positions. Identify specific perks aligning with your needs and goals. Schedule a meeting to discuss your value and how the perks enhance well-being. Justify with evidence and be open to negotiation for a mutually beneficial agreement. Follow up in writing to confirm any agreed-upon changes.

The package is actually your own worth which you percieve in your own mind. While negotiating, at times we over exaggerate our own worth and at times we underestimate it, we should always remember the company would be willing to pay more if we can contribute more to the organization. It is always about value addition, if we can add more value to our firm it automatically makes us valuable asset. We should always work over how we can contribute more, by learning new skills, certifications etc. Once we are confident that we can bring more to the table then we do not limit ourself to one firm. The sky is the limit for those who constantly improve upon their own skills.

When determining your worth, you need to think granular. What's the industry salary for your zip code. What's the market value? Do they align? What is the the experience level in the area? How many job openings are in your area? What the demand for your specific role. Put your job description into AI and ask what would title this position should have. If it doesn't align, address that. Titles are tied to wage bands. You can also ask AI after you input your resume to tell you what your salary should be, don't include your name. After doing all of research identify gaps and costs and can your company afford it? Knowing your worth vs. Budget is key. Good luck!

I recommend during performance reviews. Come prepared, with completed projects, revenue earned, personal profit margin, rewards and culture contributions. It's a review, let your company know ways they can also improve, all data-driven suggestions. Then propose your benefit. It should be very conversationable, positive and with a let me, help you, help me, help you vibe. Know that your direct supvisor may not have the authority so before the meeting, if possible get the decision maker to join. You don't want them to hear your request second hand because your messenger may not present with the same passion. Try to never ask at the end of the year or Q1. March - June probably yield best results. Can we do a survey to verify that?

WIIFM - What's in it for me? When requesting additional benefits, showing the profitable side to the company is vital. You should have research, verifiable data and or scaleable options. The BLS, and Employment Benefit Surveys are a great resource for this. Also, use AI and the prompt, "you are my boss who is hesitant to approve my request. Let's role that role conversation" When you are done ask what you could have done to help convince them. That should help identify any gaps. Also, get all agreements in writing to hold both parties accountable. Lastly, make sure it makes sense for your role and growth in the company. If you a janitor and want to work from, probably not the right benefit for you. Link everything to what's in it for them.

Be sure to allow enough time to effectively negotiate. Avoid getting heated during negotiations. Be careful not to demand too much, as this may inadvertently raise their expectations of you and stack the cards against you. Follow up with a summary of what was agreed upon.

Everything is negotiable and you won't know if you don't ask. However, it's important to approach negotiations professionally and respectfully. By prioritizing what's important and being realistic about compensation, you can increase your chances of securing additional benefits or perks in your salary package.
