What do you do if you want to secure a higher salary in a competitive job market?

Lo mas importante es hacer un autoanalisis y entender donde esta tu propuesta de valor diferencial. Donde excedes las contribuciones individuales medias de la compañia. Reforzar los puntos fuertes en lugar de los debiles. Formacion continua. Y tener una buena red de contactos a los que poder aportarles valor.

One thing I've found very helpful is to continue growing out networks both within your own organisation and partner organisations. There are many transferrable skills that converge across many industries. I.e. What works well within IT may have similar transferrable aspects to Finance, from the perspective of leadership approach, day-to-day management and value realisation. By showcasing how these can be transferred and not fearing other industries can massively help. Creating the DNA thread between skills, experiences and achievements is also highly beneficial, but what is more important over and above this is the "how" you sustain these, and continue to grow and develop personally.

Enhancing skills is the first step of a many step process to increase one’s pay dramatically. A good pre-step to this would be soul-searching and checking if the skills gained are in alignment with one’s passions and interests. While the skills are getting acquired, it is important to expose oneself to various projects, observe the industry trends related to those projects and attune oneself to them. Working on multifaceted, global projects will round out one’s skills and ensure one is at par with the zeitgeist of the industry!

Its a continuous learning throughout our lifetime. This what we call experiences. When you make the best of an experience it becomes skill. Always lookout for new skills which will help in your current job and the ones which will prepare you for the next one. Don't pick anything random to learn, but pick ones which you think can give a monetary gain if applied. There's always a glass ceiling for a particular job role, and to break that, one might have to harness new skills. Always think like an entrepreneur and evaluate ROI while taking any courses.

While the notion of 'security' in terms of salary can seem contradictory as an employee, it remains crucial to strive for a higher salary to align with inflation and your financial independence objectives. Strategic Networking is a goto skill to not only secure a better paycheque but about cultivating meaningful relationships that can support. Start with identifying the right market/people. Build Genuine Relationships by being authentic Be a Giver, Not Just a Taker. Offer value to your contacts by sharing your expertise, resources, or connections. This will make them open up to you about opportunities they are aware of. Negotiate Strategically.Use your connections to advocate for yourself effectively and demonstrate your value to prospective employers or clients.

While on the job, ensure that you get involved in challenging projects or assignments that will allow you to demonstrate your abilities and showcase your value to your employer. Volunteering on taking up projects, initiatives during industry events can position you for opportunities as well.

We have just finished a report into high performance attributes of our top 5% to 10% of C-Suite level applicants in 2023. Interestingly, the attribute of Networks / Partnership / Negotiations was not as strong as we would have liked. In some sectors, networks are gold. IN NZ, we say "The currency of Wellington (our capital) is relationships." This also actually means 'reputation' not just networks. However, the weakness we saw when evaluating high-performance in candidates related to a propensity of executives to delegate critical relationships and also negotiations to some other staff member rather than themselves.

Actively network with professionals in your industry, both online and in-person. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and participate in relevant online communities. Leverage your network to learn about job opportunities, gain insights into companies, and potentially secure referrals. Maintain strong relationships with former colleagues and managers, as they can be valuable connections.

Recruiters are different on this. You get away from validating results. You can't talk yourself into a role by fancy design or fancy weasel words. You have to demonstrate track-record and validate your results to me. Other recruiters may be impressed, but not me.

From my practical experience serving young people, adults and seniors in my Personal Brand program. The resume should be segmented according to the interests and objectives of the applicant. I have observed that the jump in salary is in mobilizing what is stated in the resume into actions. There is a saying in Chile "from saying to deed there is a long way"

Make your resume come to life by quantifying your impact. It’s not enough to say you led a project or managed a team. What was the result of that? How did your actions support the business? Also, don’t forget about your living resume on LinkedIn. More and more job applications request your LinkedIn profile. Keep it updated and relevant to the roles you’re applying to. And, stand out from other candidates by building your thought leadership on the platform.

Durante a entrevista fique atento também com as suas expressões faciais (uma microexpressão de felicidade ajuda muito) e nunca se esqueça: jamais "venda" aquilo que você não tem condições de entregar.

Be confident, transparent, professional while appearing for interview. Ensure logistics for the interview are in place while attending remotely. Make a mind map of how your experiences will deliver value to the organization you are applying for. Organizations are looking for leaders but at the same time they need loyal followers. Hence, be a mix of both while answering to situational questions. You can disagree on certain points of the interviewer but don't argue. Mention how will you fill any understanding gaps identified by the interview panel. Justify the job change with new experiences and thoughts you are trying to explore and nothing negative about the current organization. Be ready to hard bargain your expectations on compensation

A shot of realism doeth good like a medicine. Likely if you are money and position fixated, you would not have made it to this stage with me anyway. A person who continually hops quickly from one role to another does not impress me or make a case for higher salary. They are like a skipping stone across a lake, and eventually that stone sinks. The risk of the person is too high. Therefore, your salary expectations should be attuned to your actual experience and talent, not the advice of your insight-less friends. And if you are taking a step down to go back up, then be realistic. For example, a CFO who wants to be a CEO but does not have the broadness of CEO skills, may choose to go to a small CEO role first to get skills and experience.

Research industry salary ranges and be prepared to justify your desired compensation with data and examples of your contributions. Practice negotiation techniques and be willing to respectfully counter-offer if the initial offer is below your expectations. Consider non-monetary benefits, such as additional vacation time, flexible work arrangements, or professional development opportunities. Be prepared to walk away if the offer is significantly below your minimum requirements.
