I have a deep passion for college and pro-football. My focus would be on the top high school football players in the nation. Not only would I focus on a top players football talent, I'd focus also on their competitiveness, passion for the game and ability to lead by example. I definitely have an eye for talent. I spent 7 years coaching teenage girl's volleyball. In that 7 years, my team remained undefeated. Talent is very important when it includes competitiveness, ability to lead, the ability to be led and most of all to see things through to the very end.

Networking is HUGE in any industry. Me myself coming from football, it's not about what you can do, it's also about who knows what you can do, and what talents you may have.

One of the great joys and privileges of my life is having been a founder, building a team and growing a sports consultancy and management business. It’s not for the faint hearted. Realistically, it’s not long hours, it’s ALL hours for the first ten years and I mean that very literally. Every waking moment and some sleeping moments too. Don’t embark on it if you’re not prepared to commit all, risk all and ‘live it’. Our journey was easier because we worked hard to start with at establishing the (slightly cliched but essential) USP that differentiated us and a different and dynamic commercial model. Work out what makes you different and be prepared to take risks on your commercial model, especially early on.

Roll up your sleeves and get ready for pain and be prepared to do whatever it takes. It's great to have a business plan, most likely it won't work out as you had planned or take a lot longer than expected. Being flexible, learn fast and make adjustments as you go is key. I started TSA in 1997 with a great plan to take over the Malaysian Football League commercial rights. 3 months later Asia was hit by a massive Financial Crisis and all our plans went out of the window. Only resilience and a strong believe that we were having something unique to offer kept us alive and allowed us to grow over the next decades, now 27 yrs later we are still standing. 🙏

Some thoughts to consider; 1. Clearly define your product/service offering ie strategic planning, marketing, governance, finance, coaching, club development- it might be more than just one (in fact I would suggest you have more than one) 2. Build your network - reach out to others in the industry 3. Identify other sports orgs or consultant's you can trust and work with 4. Develop awareness of your organisation- on social, speak at conferences, podcasts, write blogs etc 5. Keep researching and reading - keep fine tuning your product and identify new areas

Make a serious in detail market analysis. Have a neutral person evaluating it - if you have a realistic chance to have success in this business. Save enough money to survive the first 2 to 3 years before you start.

If you have a skill in sports, coaching or managing it is important for you to realise that your skill is less important than knowing how to run a business. If it is your first business, it is important to invest in business coaching and support so that you know how to operate a business. You must see yourself as an investor rather than the doer. That way you see things in terms of return on investment rather than cost. That is what a CEO does. Hiring is an investment, learning is an investment and implementation is natural after that. Too many people start a business and think that because they are a good coach, everything will just happen for them. In truth, if that’s the case, you might as well work for someone else.
