For me I am a member of AFE. It helps me to see what is being used at other sites. It also allows me to meet with others in the field to see what they are doing, or what they might be using. Attending conferences or webinars is good as well. Just remember many or sales events. That is alright if you know that going in and you are there to listen and learn. I tend to also rely on trusted vendors as to what they are seeing in other places. If it is something specific I am a big believer in online research. YouTube for example has a wealth of information on a wide variety of subjects in almost every field. I can't think of a time I had to re-invent the wheel. I have just had to find one that fit. Maybe a little customization or bling to fit.
