What do you do if your audience is resistant to building rapport and trust as a motivational speaker?

If your audience seems unsure or skeptical, it's important to acknowledge that. Share stories about your own struggles or experiences to connect with them. Be real and open, showing that you're just like them. Ask questions and really listen to their answers. Find common ground or things you both care about. Building trust takes time, so be patient and keep trying to connect with them. Eventually, they'll start to trust you.

Address it. That type of energy is palpable, and too often, we allow it to become the gorilla in the room. Share sincere stories and create transparency by acknowledging how challenging trust and collaboration are. Ease into a Socratic approach and be open to honest responses from your audience. This may require extreme flexibility but it also may be enriching. I have literally thrown out everything I intended to say and do because my audience needed to go in a different direction. Those are unquestionably some of my favorite experiences!

Funny is money.. laugh at yourself because we only have one life! Laughter is contagious and it feels good! Tell jokes and if they bomb laugh harder... We all want to hang out with people that make us feel good and accept us as we are. Go on stage and hug them through the belly vibrations!

Become a storyteller who "tells" on yourself. As a motivational speaker, your goal is to have folks really hear you, make a connection to themselves, and become open to changing. It is very powerful to tell a story that is an example of the type of behavior/thinking that you are promoting, and the benefit of making that change when it is a TRUE story about YOU. I don't mean a full-blown confessional with gory details. I mean a fundamentally true experience about you that does not reflect well on you, the revelation you had, the change you made, and the positive payoff. It's not about you as a hero, it's about you as a flawed human being who searched who soul and chose to change. Your honesty will be compelling.
