What do you do if your career development initiatives are not meeting their goals?

Pause and pinpoint where the disconnect lies. As someone who's navigated these waters, I suggest directly soliciting feedback from participants to better understand their needs and expectations. It may be necessary to tailor these programs more closely to individual career paths or introduce varied development opportunities that strike a chord with your audience. Being flexible and willing to experiment with new approaches is crucial. Keep communication open and involve participants in reshaping the initiatives. This way, you can adjust your strategies to ensure your career development efforts are empowering and effective.

While your own progress must be analysed thoroughly, one should also look at the trending initiatives and what your client is looking for? In my opinion , a standardised CD initiative doesn’t work. Taking hints from the recent fall of many edtechs, you need to customise it after receiving feedback, team analysis and realign your goals.

Any project or organisation must have biannual analysis to see the following: 1. Are the objectives set are met or not? 2. Are there any gaps in terms of delivery, execution or assessment in the initiative? 3. Looking at half-yearly progress, one should revisit the methods, strategies and gaps to ensure that the annual objectives are achieved. 4. Sometimes, the chain of management needs a thorough check to see where the leak is in terms of delivery, communication and recording outcomes.

Em minha experiência como Especialista em Desenvolvimento de Carreiras percebo o quanto é importante trocarmos ideias, boas práticas ou mesmo fazer perguntas para outros profissionais. Não devemos nos fechar na nossa bolha, sob o risco de nos tornarmos obsoletos em um mundo que está constantemente em evolução.

Getting other peoples perspectives, people use trust, is really important. We can get stuck in the echo chamber of our own thoughts, or even of our really close family and friends. This makes it important to go outside of our immediate circle and find mentors or outside of work to discuss, career development and career growth especially if you were thinking of investing money into this. For example: speak to others who have done the same or similar courses. I find there’s value in seeking input from folks in your niche or in your field but I also see value and getting completely fresh perspective from somebody outside of your field. It’s important to have a big picture perspective.

Taking a feedback from an outsider or a mentor gives a neutral yet insightful perspective on the pitfalls or deficiencies of the CD initiatives. It also could be an opportunity to pivot a bit and improvise the existing project to a higher level or expanding to a different users or service takers.
