What do you do if your career takes a major hit?

This happened to me 9 years ago and looking back was the best thing that has ever happened to me, because it gave me the power back. I was exhausted and needed to step out for a while. I got some career coaching and it gave me time and space to look at the reality of why I worked, what I needed and drive me not that I knew at the time to build my business. The reality was I had a good network, support at home and financially 6 months..which I know is a luxury but knowing what you have are looking then at what you need going forward is a good place e to start. By digging in and learning how others feel about you and/or perceive you, it can open up opportunities for you to identify how you contribute to people and what truly motivates and fulfills you, ensuring that your next career move is not only a step forward but also a meaningful one. Understanding yourself better also enables you to articulate your strengths and unique qualities to potential employers, increasing your chances of finding a role that is a good fit for both you and the organization. Start with the WHY!

If your career has taken a major hit, now would be a great time to reflect deeply on if you are doing what you love. Oftentimes we go further and further down a path because we've established ourselves in our career, we've put in the time, and we are afraid of going backwards. We generally equate success with money and status. But are you truly happy? Are you doing what you love? If yes, keep fighting for it. This is not the end. If no, explore what a path might look like to do something you love. You may have to take a step back and take a risk, but it could end up being one of the best things you've ever done in your life.

A few years back, I faced a tough phase where everything seemed off track. What worked? Setting small, achievable goals and knocking them out, one by one. It's all about building momentum. Whether it’s updating your skills, networking, or just refining your CV, keep at it every day. This routine doesn’t just lead to progress - it boosts your confidence and gets you back in the game stronger than ever.

One step forward, every day. Make weekly goals that turn into monthly goals, etc. Do not wallow in misery!! There is absolutely nothing to gain from feeling sorry for yourself. Oftentimes you will find yourself suddenly without the friends you thought you had. It's ok. The true ones will stay. Take the time to perfect everything. Resume, skills, take training courses available on this platform. Volunteer. Get out and offer your services, there are many organizations to choose from. Above all, stay positive. Always.

This involves taking daily actions aligned with my recovery goals, such as updating my resume, networking, and acquiring new skills. Consistency is paramount in maintaining momentum and overcoming challenges. While progress may seem slow at times, it’s essential to remain steadfast in pursuing small, steady steps towards your objectives. Consistent effort not only demonstrates commitment and reliability but also paves the way for significant achievements over time.

You may find that your career setback is actually a blessing in disguise. For example, marketing content writers took a hit when AI exploded, but it also opened up new opportunities for prompt generation. Great content writers were able to capitalize on AI tools to create content that amplified their skills and brought new assets to the table that would normally take a team of creatives and writers to complete. There are likely a ton of opportunities out there that may create a natural synergy with your existing skills and allow you to shift to a new position naturally.

In the face of changing circumstances, I prioritize implementing the “Adaptive Flexibility” technique. This involves remaining open to new ideas and paths that may diverge from my original plans. Flexibility is about adjusting my approach while staying true to my goals. This may involve exploring different roles or industries to gain diverse experiences or capitalize on emerging opportunities. Embracing flexibility equips me with the agility needed for long-term success and leadership in a rapidly evolving professional landscape.

Be okay with starting over. There are realistic financial concerns. However, the more considerable challenge is the unknown and our ego stories (what we tell ourselves in these moments). Starting over can provide many opportunities for introspection, re-evaluation, and alignment of our values and needs. View it as an opportunity for growth rather than loss.

Dig in. Embrace resilience like never before. Climbing out of the hole you're in is hard - like really, hard. Accepting the reality that you may never be back on top where you were is even harder. But reframing your definition of success could be sanity-saver that you need. It certainly helped me. I asked myself what I want at this stage, what I'm happy to leave behind, and what I have left to prove to myself or do for others. Anchored in deep reflection, I was able to separate out the emotions related to the setback to enable me to think clearly and strategically - what do I REALLY want? Not what I think I want, but I truly do. That was the breakthrough and gamechanger for me that set me on my new path.

The chances that your career will take a hit sooner or later are high. It has less to do with you and more to do with the current market place and the current world we live in. So the best is to get ready BEFORE it actually happens by actually building more than 1 stream of income and avoiding having all legs in 1 basket. Think about: - how can you create passive income? - what side hassle can you start building which eventually can take over if/when needed? - Never NOT neglect your personal branding. It is the only thing you have full control on.
