In my experience attending industry conferences is a great start to know people and areas of common interest. Having said that a few things are important to keep in mind at these forum- 1. I love the mentor or coaching aspect. It was very important for my professional development. Find a person that cares enough to help point out and correct mistakes, wrong approaches, shortcomings, etc. in your desired field or position. And remember there is a huge difference between wisdom and experience. Just because someone has walked the road before you doesn't make them a good teacher. Having a true relationship with your coach and mentor opens up transparency and growth opportunities exponentially. Lastly, pay it forward when it's time. Take the learnings (good and bad) from your experience of being coached and mentored and use it at the proper time to edify the next generation.

I haven't found a better way than engaging mentors to expand my network quickly. When I was younger I would reach out to potential mentors and ask for help. Then, I'd ask who else I should be speaking to (who else do you respect? is a great question to ask). Now, I like to engage mentors through their programs and share my story in an open, honest way. I like to help them as well, make it a two way street and then ask them who else I should be speaking to. This has yielded amazing results and a great network that I'm proud of.

Mentor networks are a cheat-code. Ideally your mentor is already successful and surrounds themselves with successful people (including you). Don't make a habit of saying no to a mentor, if they are good, they will push you, but push you in the right direction.

Education is an excellent way to find colleagues with not only a common interest, but the desire to put effort to getting better. Your cohort in any activity will include a few worthy connections, and you will always have your time in class as a solid foundation for a long-term working relationship.

I have recently started this and my network is small. It takes time & often slower than you expected. Just keep doing and one day it will click. Don't focus too much on numbers but create content that adds value to the network. Not only create content but engage actively.

Remember that networking is not just about quantity; it’s about building quality relationships. Take small steps consistently, and over time, your network will grow and become more robust.

And get real about your current connections - if these aren't the people who can help you level up and get better - it's time to find new connections!

The key to all of these suggestions and steps to execute: - Deliver value! - Asking for the meeting and delivering value in the ask. Why is it valuable to them to meet? - Meeting with the people and delivering value in the meeting. Why is the meeting well invested for them? - Making an ask aligned to the relationship. Why is it valuable to them to fulfill the ask? - Deliver more value. - Repeat. Without these steps, you will not likely build meaningful connections that get you what you need. Granted it is possible to build quality relationships with people over social, but they are rare. The issue is the comfort default. Many will say no to a meeting early on, but keep asking as it will be worth the effort!😁
