What do you do if your project team faces high-stress emergency situations?

Staying calm in high-stress emergency situations sets the tone for your team and ensures effective response. Start by practicing mindfulness and stress management techniques like deep breathing and meditation. Clearly identify priorities to focus on the most critical tasks first. Lead by example with a proactive, action-oriented approach. After the crisis, reflect on the events to learn and improve. By staying calm and composed, you can inspire confidence and navigate emergencies successfully.

As a combat pilot and anesthesiologist, the best advice I can give is to rely on your training. Repetition builds confidence, enhances muscle memory, and removes doubt in high-stress situations. Remember that slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Interestingly, work life is a dilemma between success and failure. Challenges are inevitable to everyday life especially at workplace or solving problems. However, one needs to stay cool, calm and collected in situations that is out of hand so he/she can be able to release positive energy to work.

Be mindful that teams and team members can often be diverse around the scope of information that they expect or desire to be shared from leadership. Some prefer only to be told what they need to know when they need to know it. Others need more transparency and detail. Keep this in mind and acknowledge this when framing your briefings and updates.

3.Delegate Responsibilities: Assign specific tasks to team members based on their strengths and expertise. This helps prevent overwhelm and ensures that crucial aspects of the project are handled effectively.

One of the things that I found successful in my years as a test director for the military was to not keep “secrets“ from the team. I always put out all the information I had based on the situations at hand. I found this was easier than trying to taylor explanations to each individual or manager of an asset.

Effective communication serves the people you are communicating to. Having regular check-ins and updates can serve to maintain a rhythm of communication that is expected. Clearly repeating the mission and making relevant topics the center of the communication, serves the team well. Also, allowing their input and giving public praise is also a great practice.

Agree with the importance of taking action, but would caveat this with 'know the protocol.' If someone did the work to define a plan, don't go off making a duplicate one just to be able to say you did something. Check in, work smart and then do the tactical things, like: "Assign tasks to team members based on their strengths and the needs of the moment."

This a great point. A general plan of action is great to have. It will save time and will allow for a more concise response. A general plan should be basic to encompass many emergencies and simple enough to adjust for different situations. On going training makes this easier, but isn’t always available. Running roll plays, with a partner or even alone in your head will help. Think of different scenarios and how you would attack them efficiently. Play out how would handle it. Repeat the scenario again and again.This can make an emergency response just muscle memory.

When you have a lackadaisical attitude towards work space environment, there is tendency that you may not meet up the tasks if the day/week. Endeavor to plan in bits for little accomplishment than failing off plans for bigger achievements.

"After responding to the immediate threats, take time to review your team's actions." Yes, agree. This is sometimes called a retrospective (popularized by agile) or, more commonly an 'after action review' (popularized by military).

Always have time to balance between work and life. Insist in accomplishing your goals for the day before seeking for tomorrow's goals. Because today is capable of having good review than tomorrow.

One of the things that I use was an immediate review of the response, and then a review of the overall plan to see if we could complete the plan as scheduled, or needed to adjust to meet a new timeline. That also was immediately communicated to the stakeholders.

Interact and relate positively with whoever that comes your way, because you may be unawares of the opportunities right waiting for.
