Self assessment is necessary, either you are losing out in presenting yourself or you lack knowledge of the subject you wish to present. Go back to basics read even the smallest of information available and create a new story to present out of it

I realized I was missing the points I wanted to make in several of my speeches and that I was not reaching my audience. I wasn't sure what I needed to change so I sought feedback from what I call my focus group. These are my colleagues and friends, and one a mentor who gave me critical feedback before. She took a video and several took notes. It was important to listen and learn where I lost my audience, went off message, used humor ineffectively, and more. It was a gift to me to hear how much they wanted to help me make the necessary adjustments to be successful.

I'd say it's all about practice. Just understand where you are right now, and re-assess your current skills. Challenge the status-quo and engage in challenging public speaking activities even if you're shy. You won't perform the best unless you get out of your comfort zone. Have some visible faith in your content and eventually you'll conquer the pitch.

If my public speaking isn't advancing my career, I need to rethink my strategy. I should align my presentations with my organization's goals and highlight my strategic thinking. Seeking feedback will help me refine my skills and tailor my message to address key challenges or interests of decision-makers. Diversifying my communication skills, like writing impactful reports or engaging in one-on-one discussions, could also help. Networking with influential colleagues and taking on high-visibility projects might further boost my profile and demonstrate my readiness for promotion.

Get a coach or join an organisation like toastmasters! You don’t know what you don’t know and having the perspective of those who are doing what you want to do, and doing it well will accelerate your progress.

There is nothing such as too much practice for public speaking. And it’s going to be the same every time you have the stage. And what I have seen is that some great public speakers who became overconfident lost their charm gradually. So keep on practicing every time you have to face the spotlight.

The most important thing is having self confidence in the content you're delivering if you're delivering anything of which you yourself are not comfortable and confident in sharing or recommending others you'll always lack something on stage, it will help you to speak with confidence without needing to mug up or missing some points.

I took time off last year to improve my speaking skills so I need to be more visible this coming year. I submitted proposals for several conferences and signed up to be part of two different organizations that will help promote my services. I am an author and just launched a new book, host a podcast, and have been a guest on multiple podcasts and webinars. I am active on social media and realized that growing my following leverages my visibility. I am reconsidering how to reach more organizations where I can showcase my skills as a speaker and coach.

Social media is a good way to find events. Follow and check relevant hashtags to your areas of expertise. Follow businesses in your given area that post about events they attend or run. Make sure to use a range of platforms to find a better range of opportunities

What people see is what sells, make sure you use every single opportunity you get to be visible and make an impact. Most people spend their entire life wishing for opportunities but don’t lift a finger when it knocks their door. So, don’t be one of them, start by taking charge, be visible. Make sure you use every possible platform at your disposal to grow your business, brand or awareness. Be mindful of awareness talks not all platforms are suitable for it. But if it is for the common good and humanity, raise your voice and be an active participant. Being visible just doesn’t mean speaking everywhere, it means that people trust you and value you and your voice matters, so make sure you earn that respect and trust, rest will follow.

To excel as a public speaker, being a keen listener is essential, especially when it comes to feedback from a mentor. Choose a mentor who is not only passionate about speaking but also someone you trust to support your growth. Additionally, seek suggestions from fellow speakers—collaborating with peers can provide diverse perspectives that further refine your skills and boost your confidence.

Mentorship largely remains a strategy yet to be tapped maximally. Personally, public speaking is still something I haven’t gotten a hang of. My belief is, prospective ‘mentees’ still find it difficult or don’t know how to actively get a mentor in the right way. Some prospective mentors don’t know if they are even good enough to be one and those who know are already overwhelmed or not interested in being one. There’s a need to keep speaking on how mentorship can help hone skills and make mentors know that they are good enough to be one. Seek out those you have seen so it well, show interest and be active in politely requesting for them to mentor you. Don’t pester and when you start getting the tips for public speaking, practice it and move!
