What do you do if your public speaking lacks effective pauses and silences?

In Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds' movie, there is a scene where a German army officer is able to catch that he is sitting with a group of English soldiers, posed as German soldiers in a pub in France, during the Second World War. The German is able to sniff out the fraud because of the way the impostor soldier, played by Michael Fassbender, raises his first three fingers to order 3 glasses of drinks. Tarantino dedicates a full minute of silence focusing on the face of the German, making mental connection of the fraud, while forcing the viewers to ponder what is being shown. Similarly speakers must pause after an important statement to let it sink in. You have no other tool to guide the audience !!

The key is to speak in full sentences. Many people speak in long, run-on sentences because of the use of too many conjunctions. "So" ... "and" ... "but" ... are routinely used to connect phrases together when, in fact, the sentence should end. Next time you hear someone speaking, listen for this. It is really quite common. Develop the habit of speaking in full sentences by reading aloud. Take a big breath, start the sentence and come to a full stop. Period. Pause. New breath.

Pauses are essential in public speeches, punctuating your words and allowing information to be absorbed. Just like white space in a book, pauses make content readable. Study skilled speakers to learn their effective use.

Like I mentioned in another article, specially during global level Public Speaking, you have to be mindful of the audience from across countries. In some countries, people usually speak fast. While in some, they have slower accent. For me, as some one hailing from India, I fall in the former category. And in the past, I had received this feedback of being a little too fast while talking. Although my overall content and accent would be fine, still, people from certain countries would find it difficult to catch the pace of my speech. I started working on it. In the process I realised that be it from those countries or not, audience, in general, need the speaker to pause at right times, so as to soak in and process what's being said.

Practice makes perfect when it comes to mastering the art of pausing. Record yourself in action and listen for those natural moments where a pause could work wonders—enhancing understanding or adding a touch of drama. Start small by inserting pauses at commas and periods as you read aloud. As you gain confidence, dare to experiment with longer pauses after impactful points. But remember, it's not about pausing for the sake of it; it's about leveraging silence to underscore your message and allow your audience to soak it all in. Three things. First, they say: timing is everything. It really is. When did you last hear a comedian tell an old-fashioned joke? Second, effective performers, i.e. actors, barristers, comedians, preachers, and singers, etc. manipulate tension with cadence, pause, pitch, space, tempo, timbre, and timing, etc. In order to do it, one must deeply-understand one’s audience. For example, technique that triggers tears in one audience may trigger laughter in another. Third, public speaking is more like art, music, and song than anything else. Data analytics and conscious thinking are only involved during preproduction. The rest is authenticity and automaticity, i.e. automatic innate skill as well as instantiated lessons and practice. One thing I have personally found useful is to observe different types of speakers like News Readers, Paper Presenters, Lecturers, Motivational Speakers. Observing how they are speaking and when they are taking pauses makes us learn quickly. Try to read different types of scripts such as Blogs, Novels, Newspapers, Conversations etc. Practice pauses wherever there are punctuation marks. Slowly you will notice a change!
