Ask & check first is it the Strategy or the Tactics and execution thereof? Even a poor strategy executed well is better than a great strategy executed poorly. Then revisit the strategy and check/test the assumptions thereof re the micro/macro trends relevance and fundamentally does it meet a customer need that is differentiated? (What - is it we are delivering/solving, Why - is it needed, Where - which customers/markets /channels, How - will it be delivered/priced/sold (directly/channel) effectively & profitably).

Sometimes you need to think less about efficiency and more about effectiveness, in my experience. So often as a business owner or leader, you get obsessed with squeezing the most out of the least resources or time. But the reality is that the best thing to do is just get the job done by any means necessary sometimes.

One of the lessons I learned at Amazon was to substitute missing data with explicit assumptions and confidence levels. As a team, you an decide whether to wait for data or move ahead.

Every successful decision maker still needs people they can trust to talk through ideas, strategy, upcoming conversations, etc. When you have constructive conversations, you gain perspective. Your strategic thinking and planning will improve as a result. You'll then have more confidence in the selected path forward.

You can ask one person in the room to deliberately take the contrary view, ask the 'what if' questions and this will help broaden the debate and listen to evidence that contradicts the consensus. Assigning someone this role also removes any bias against them and repercussions for speaking against the group as it is a deliberate role.

Consultants are often brought in to do this as a last resort, but this can come from client feedback, product testing, market research and even crosspollination from your personal network of strategic thinkers.

A great way to overcome groupthink as a leader is listen first before you give your perspective on something. For example, if you are in a group doing a brainstorming session, as the leader, you should listen to the ideas of others FIRST before you share your ideas. By sharing your ideas first, people in the group may no longer feel comfortable sharing their ideas, which could be the best ones, because they will view you as an Authority Figure, and assume your ideas are better than theirs. There is much research on this topic by Dr. Robert Cialdini that is clear on this one.

Different perspectives can help uncover blind spots.

The ability to zoom in and zoom out is critical in developing a strategic orientation. This comes through experience of having done it yourself while evaluating impact of the outcomes on broader perspectives like company, industry, economy. Therefore inputs from a seasoned professional helps a lot in avoiding tunnel vision

Critical thinking could be of immense help here! While execution needs a laser-focused attention, the same is not the case with stratetgic thinking. It is as simple as asking the two critcial questions regarding the startegy 1. can i visualize increased income or 2. enhanced efficiency ( rduced costs, convenience) that woudl enable my growthroadmap aligned with my broad vision!

Identifying and realizing the Tunnel vision is hard in the busy work days. There needs a strategy to give break. Keep mind out of work for 10 days in vacation. The vacation has to be filled intensively with fun activities that you get real break. After the break, you will have a space and mindset to think out of box to recover from tunnel vision.

Aside from the corporate programs, I can speak from experience - it is extremely important to surround yourself with individuals that do not think the same way that you do, but rather, challenge your thought. Those who can disrupt your own 'strategic thought process' can turn out to be your biggest benefit. Many times we want the 'out of the box' thinkers, but really what we need is thought provoking leaders that can come in and interrupt our process. The frustration that disruption brings in the middle of our 'process' turns out to be the very thing needed to change our strategic thinking for (not only) business growth plans.

Deploying rapid "tests", in a phased approach can effectively free a team from fear of suffering major business ramifications from deploying the "wrong" strategy. Establishing two or three premises and vetting them quickly can: ✔️avoid wasted time on proven unsuccessful business paths, ✔️learn early the wrong or right direction for the strategy by learning undertaking defined, narrow tests that are focused , singular and quickly implementable, ✔️allow divergent strategies to be vetted simultaneously at the test stage to same time, and ✔️permit teams to build upon one another's findings to create a more comprehensive strategy & implementation plan without overwhelming the team with for an extended "strategy development period. "

I would say, try getting input from others, looking at things differently, and being open to new ideas.....also, focus on taking practical steps forward instead of overthinking things too much.👍

“Long term ; short term mismatch” Strategic thinking often like chess sacrifices short term gains to build a stronghold for sustainable advantage. Advantage which will matter over a longer term. This creates pressure on annual sales and cash flow sometimes. This calls for a Gantt chart type planning where on one hand keep cash flow and numbers constant and then plant strategic initiatives around it. That will enable you to work on dual goals.
