What do you do if your students consistently miss deadlines?

Communicate. Listen. Empathy is key. Personal issues, lack of confidence or motivation are often behind missed deadlines. Try to be flexible. Have them start small (adapt homework / objectives: something is better than nothing) and they will gradually start handing things in (progressive/continuous feedback = + quality and + quantity :)

I would have a coffee morning with him and ask what is the reason for the constant delays. We need to practice empathy and be patient.

I like to think that deadlines are negotiable, but negotiated deadlines are not renegotiable at all! It can be a slightly confusing phrase, but it sums up the situation in a few words. If, before making a commitment to deliver that demand on that date, there is a conversation about the deadline, that's okay: people will probably understand your point, unless the deadlines are very urgent.

Cada inicio de ciclo debemos tomarnos 1 ó 2 clases para compartir explícitamente cuáles son las expectativas del trayecto educativo. Hacerles saber a nuestros estudiantes cuáles van a ser los contenidos que vamos a priorizar y porqué, cuáles serán nuestros objetivos para abordar la tarea y por supuesto en qué tiempos estaremos desarrollando cada actividad. I have found that I must always "come from a place of love". Show them that you care and that you want them to succeed. You have to put yourself in their position. Be empathetic🩷

One way I support the students is to make allowances for technical difficulties in my deadlines. Formally, I give about an extra hour to account for submission difficulties in the aforementioned circumstances, but of course, as a teacher, reasonable discretion is exercised as well on a case by case basis, in terms of giving grace. Yes such a balance is important. For example, I typically implement a maximum cap to how many marks are deducted for late assignments, so that students are still given a fair chance to pass if they submit really late. Of course, even for such circumstances, teacher discretion can still be exercised, but not in a way which makes it unfair for other students.

After many years, I found one way of handling project deadlines, that was both motivational and rests the responsibility on the student. First, break up major deadlines into several smaller deadlines; this is more manageable for students. Clearly define exactly what elements are due on each deadline. Smaller checkins allows for faster grading. Be extremely strict about what is /is not given credit. Then, give them 24 hours where any element that did not accomplish by deadline is given 100% credit for what they show to you with a day. I don't know why it works, maybe it's seeing the "temp" grade in the gradebook and having the ability to change it, or may because I gave the "power" to the student. Much less stressful on both sides.

Balance always has to be maintained. I typically deduct a few marks for late submission, so that its fair to the students who handed in the work on time and the other students are also given a fair chance to get their work evaluated.

I find that setting small, achievable goals can really help a student that has been falling behind, as a mountain of missed work piles up it can be intimidating. If you can break that cycle and give them a few consistent wins, they can get back on track.

As an educator,I'll go after a big "WHY"?;the reason behind missing the deadlines.I"ll establish an inquiry on my teaching style,material,type of task and alignment of lesson objectives with learners aptitude.Moreover,I'll scrutinize the proportnality of my knowledge instillation with the actual need and calliber of learners. In case, something is unproportional in my teaching style or methodoly, I must go for its remediation. Conversely,I must go to the flip side of the coin,and diagnose the reasons of missing deadlines from learners perspectives.After diving deep to find root causes,I must go for its solutions either simplifying tasks or tailoring them according to individual learner needs.

We generally criticize our students with ease but find it rather difficult to celebrate their tiny successes. Constructive feedback goes a long way in helping young minds develop.

Eu uso o classroom aqui na escola é uma ótima ferramenta para ter o controle. Com ela você consegue informar a data de entrega dos trabalhos e a ferramenta fica mandando mensagem para avisar o aluno caso ele não tenha feito.

I agree it is important to communicate with the different stakeholders. The key however is how soon. It is crucial to keep every stakeholder informed from the moment the student starts slipping. It should not come as a surprise to a parent at the end of a semester. A clear way to collect data and tracking is essential to this. Automation of notices in missed deadlines could also help to keep all stakeholders on the same page.

In my experience, setting and communicating clear expectations is important, with having a relationship ship with the pupils where they can express their concerns rather than avoiding the homework and monitoring the performance.

I had six deadlines per semester. I noticed that most students are late with submissions. I wanted to be flexible but also fair to those who submit on time. I made a new submission rule: -every students has the right to ask for 72 hours deadline extension (once per semester) That made students plan in advance based on their priorities and emergencies. It also made them happy with the late submission penalty as they -sometimes- want to save the extension for later.

Some students simply don’t have a space to do their assignments. Perhaps they don’t have a suitable, table, desk, or even bed of their own to work. Create a nurturing, loving, supportive environment for students to come back to after their classes are over. Have appropriate music playing (low) , provide a snack, and then provide the academic support. Sometimes, they know the information, they just can’t do it at home.

May I devide the task into subtasks and each subtask has its deadline to train them And to to follow the motivation rule, the one who stick wit deadline will be the team leader or has some extra grades.
