What do you do if you're an entry-level Engineering Manager with overwhelming responsibilities?

An engineering manager should assign work based on team members' technical skills and areas for development. Detailed instructions, proper tools, and an environment that promotes autonomy are critical for successful project execution. Clear communication and confidence in one's team are essential components of effective leadership in this dynamic sector.

in general would avoid repetitive carry over of tasks, if a task delayed either to be prioritized or killed. would understand the landscape, don't add tasks that doesn't belong to the landscape. would communicate with others to synch with other peers to align priorities not to end up running a silo or run in silo.

Here's What Works In 2024. An engineering manager’s main job is to solve any engineering problem during a project. They also respond to technical questions, propose budgets for projects, train new staff members, and work with other departments.

Prioritising your tasks is very important to achieve the project goals.💯 I use a simple approach to handle prioritising situations and this will help you too. There are 2 ✌🏻simple steps: 1. I list down all the tasks that need to be done 2. Set them into my Priority Matrix 🛑 Now what is the Priority Matrix? 👉 There are 4 sections in this Priority Matrix, which help you decide the urgency and importance of the task. A. Urgent & Important B. Urgent & Not Important C. Not Urgent & Important D. Not Urgent & Not Important Categories tasks according to the above Matrix and voila you have easily solved your task's priority.

People stop learning as they grow 🪴. They think they know everything, which is the biggest mistake they make. Just go out and look every great founder, CEO, or Manager is a great learner. To learn in this fast-paced environment below are things I found helpful: 1. Implement a thing > look for feedback > rectify any issues > make an SOP to check it from next time. (Basically, learn from your mistakes) 2. Seek other's help if and when needed - don't hesitate. 3. Do your research based on multiple sources to verify the facts before proceeding 4. Always be open to accepting recommendations, feedback and criticism. 5. Join communities, blogs and forums in your industry interest to expand your knowledge and mind.

One of your most important duties as an engineering manager is to communicate with different people and it is important to get the needs, concerns and all necessary information from them in the most transparent manner and give them to them. Talking with sarcasm, jokes, meeting without time limit and meeting without minutes causes deviation from the main goal and reduced transparency.

Do an extensive research on the roles you are assigned and also which niche of the engineering field and perform the duties respectfully

Remember, as an engineering manager, your New Role is not to be the smartest person in the room. Your job is to make sure that task are completed, in the best way possible. Making sure that issue which may come up have solutions; such that you don't stall out the project. You get better at this with more experience

Communicate to your leadership and teams , what you are focusing on and what you are going to change and achieve? Make sure you tackle the most important problem based on your organization priority.

Delegate things that are not high priority tasks to other team mbers who are self sufficient and they get opportunity to drive and lead.

There's no hardest task that successfully delegating work when you are a first time manager (particularly if you are new to the team/company). Delegation requires trust and accountability. But how do you go about trusting your new teammates? And how about them trusting you? In my experience, it has always been key to jump in with the team and learn their tasks and challenges first. Help them through them. Build a relationship. And above all, being accountable for the outcomes, the good ones, and the bad ones too. Once you have that foundation, you will know what tasks you can delegate (and to whom) and which ones you must take on by yourself. Within 180 days, you should be able to have an established framework and go-to people.

Employes understand, you get to work on some 'fun' stuff and some 'not so fun' stuff. That's the nature of work. Delegation doesn't necessarily mean assignment - it can be a discussion of "here's what needs to be done, how do we divide it up"

One skill to consider for time management is memory. Flipping through to-dos and checking in on calendars is time consuming and context switching. Think about building a routine to help you remember things. Daily tasks and interruptions are far less impactful when you can calmly and effectively take care of them mentally rather than physically.

- Priorities the tasks is most important issue to handle this backlogs - delegate as much as we can the tasks to my sub-ordinates but with very good follow up with the team and the task progress - try to be fast responsive, increase fitness and decisions

Sometimes - your new job is to say 'no.' We try to minimize this answer - because we want to always help and get things done (moving the company forward). But there are times, where too much pressure/work load will cause failure and burnout. In these cases; where work load is not correctly prioritized (or prioritized at all) 'no' is an acceptable answer. It does usually lead to a discussion of priorities and what can be changed to accommodate all requests.

If you have trouble with your workload or feel overwhelmed, be open about it with your manager. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable, and never be afraid to ask for help. The worst thing you can do is struggle and keep quiet about it. When things are in the open, then you can work on them.
