It is extremely hard to adjust down so it’s always better to only adjust upwards if you see that you can sustain the income increase you may see in one month. As a rule paying off debts come first, then savings, then investing, and then all the niceties.

I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping disciplined. When you don't generate the income you were expecting you have to make sure everything keeps moving forward somehow. There are some bills that cannot wait, but there are some expenses you don't need at that particular moment in time and should wait. Don't over expend thinking "I will make enough next month", you don't know if that will be the case. It's better to be safe than sorry.
