To work as an Engineering Architect, one has acquired immense skills and experience. Common sense and lateral thinking are required. "Appropriate technology with cost effective solutions" would be the best methodology to adopt. Immitation and pre-determined solutions are often a failure in the competitive market of today.

Back in the 90's we exercised a flavour of today's Enterprise Architecture, using checkered paper, ruler, eraser and a pen. Not that fancy by today's standards, but we knew what we were doing. If you are on the wrong track, no magic tool can save you.

This is a long process and a lot of questions. I would first create clusters for my requirements and document my thought process and decisions made.
