What are the essential amenities and services for digital nomads?

For digital nomads, reliable and fast Wi-Fi isn't just an amenity; it's a necessity. Properties catering to nomads should ensure their Wi-Fi is not only fast but also secure, offering a strong connection in all areas, including rooms and communal spaces. This commitment to high-quality internet service significantly enhances the attractiveness and functionality of the accommodation for remote workers.

I've been a full-time traveler / digital nomad for six years. It's great to see this article. WiFi is a pinnacle of our needs and can be the "make it or break it" feature of a place we choose to stay. Also, whether a network is open, or private, is important. We often have a VPN but need both high speed and security. Since we often do video calls, or even online training, having a private space (ideally without a bed as the background) to conduct our business is another asset.

When being on workation anywhere my rating of the necessities are as follows: 1. 100% reliable Wifi/Internet of 100Mbit+ 2. Attractive Long Stay Packages and Rates 3. A Collaboration Area to mingle with like minded 4. A location in an area with stores, restaurants and bars 5. An ergonomic desk that can be lifted up and down 6. Facilities such as a Podcast or Videocast Studio 7. A Colocation Workspace facility inhouse or nearby Most hotels underestimate the market size of digital nomads and workation.

WIFI now let's talk brass tacks , service providers will tell you it is fast wifi and possibly on your private network for very low bandwidth activities you have fast wifi yet in order to actually function a digital needs at least bare min 20 mbps to function, this allotted to them. Check with your provider many times you pay for 180+ Mbps and what arrives is 100 or 75 then imagine this distributed amongst the space or rooms meaning what is left is a crawling amount of 10 which is not usable. So check with your provider, run consistent speed tests and buy boosters to allocate through out the property. Also having a back up plan, generator or hotspot will make your offering more appealing.

I did digital nomad life for 8 months. The reason I did it is for the flexibility to work from anywhere. Plans change all the time and if you have hefty fees that affect nomads you can be assured they will not stay with you again, or recommend you while traveling. Word of mouth is so strong with digital nomads, the number of properties that I've sent strangers to that I've met on buses, cafes etc I probably should have asked for commission, however, because my experience was good in how flexible properties were, I will always recommend it again.

When designing a guest room, consider what is going to be the background for someone’s video call. If it can avoid the bed and also have good lighting, that’s ideal.

Co working and social places are key and even more so zoom/skype pods or quiet spaces. It is great to have social spaces to network and chat yet digital nomads need a place to actually work where there are minimal distractions and comfortable conditions meaning, good lighting, airflow, comfortable temperature , excellent wifi and quiet areas. There should be a place where people can go to take meetings in a quiet setting and where people can work in a silent setting.

To cater to digital nomads, I'd ensure our kitchen and laundry facilities are equipped with high-quality, reliable appliances and provide 24/7 access. The kitchen would offer personal storage space and a variety of tools for cooking diverse meals, while laundry services would include fast, efficient machines and a booking system to prevent wait times. Additionally, integrating technology for easy reservation and payment via an app enhances convenience and user experience, making these essential amenities seamless and stress-free for our nomadic guests.

Providing local and cultural experiences is essential for catering to digital nomads, who often seek to immerse themselves in the local culture. Organizing community events, local tours, and workshops can enrich their stay, offering a blend of work and cultural exploration. These experiences not only enhance the attractiveness of the accommodation but also foster a deeper connection between digital nomads and the local community.

More traditional travelers are likely to tap into the wealth of knowledge available at the concierge desk. Speaking from my own experience as a digital nomad, I'm much more likely to connect with digital nomads in relevant online communities – eg. Slack channels, Facebook groups, and WhatsApp groups. For hotels in popular DN destinations with a lot of longterm guests, it could make sense to engage more directly with those online communities. Consider hosting meetups, workshops, classes, or language exchanges. Connecting with these communities is also a great way to get your name/offer in front of these travelers.

Some other useful services, especially for those of us who are travel writers or have extra time, is a means of shared transportation - be that a group tour of the local city, or a way to conveniently rent a car on site for a day instead of having to go to the airport. A huge consideration is also solo travelers who value safety and budget-friendly group activities.

Smart TV and Bluetooth Speaker... We can cast our music and movies which makes us feel we are at home. Our background music for deep work. No need to lug around a speaker. A break from laptop time and can pick up a TV series where we left off.

One of the only things I find lacking as a digital nomad is opportunities to network in person with others — fellow nomads and/or folks who work in my sector (in my case, branding and nonprofit professionals). It would be a lovely “nice to have” for hotels to curate a calendar of local business networking opportunities!

Digital space, communities are popping up all over the world where there are chats online where people can ask questions from who is the best dentist to who wants to go catch sunset. Having your space provide a chat group that people can join prior to arrival as a support would be a great additional perk.
