What are the essential features to consider when choosing game audio production software?

Nowadays, pretty much all DAWs are powerful enough to achieve professional results, and I would say that the quality value is not determined by the tool you use but rather your skill with it. Stick to one (at least for a while), master it, and your quality should be up to standards regardless of the software.

I think the character voice recording quality is of paramount importance. Environments, SFX can be sourced and manipulated by sound design, but the character’s performance and quality of recording makes a massive difference in the experience of the game

Sound Quality is hugely important. Not just for sound that's recorded like voice or foley, but also sounds created via editing/manipulating preexisting sound sources like special sound effects. If a voice sounds clear the sound effects sound low in quality, it could risk takeing the viewer/player out of the immersive experience of the game.

To me it’s more about the crafting and the creativity about sound that make people want to enjoy it ! The passion used in the foley and mixing make all the difference.

This is probably the main reason why I would pick one software over the other. I'm almost always going to pick softwares with intuitive interfaces and with workflows that befit my way of doing things. That said, since everyone has their own methods and styles, if you're looking for an audio software for you, I'd recommend doing an overview of whats available and picking up based on whatever looks the most intuitive to you, and assess from there.

Efficiency is a huge factor in working within a DAW, and being able to efficiently maneuver and utilize the DAW's user interface is a massive part in choosing the right software. You don't want to be using software that crashes consistently, or has slow loading times especially in the often deadline-focused environment of game audio design and engineering.

This I believe is one of the main aspects. There are many different UI's . Over the years I have experimented with many DAW's till I encountered a DAW that really allowed my ideas to flow. However, that being said, everyone is different, what works for me might not work for you. The DAW of my choosing is Ableton. It allows me to work very fast, it's very intuitive and overall just a great DAW.

Unfortunately, not many DAWs offer meaningful integration tools with Game Engines or Middlewares, so in this regard, Reaper is way ahead of the curve. However, I don't think this is as important as mastering your tool. You can always convert and/or integrate your assets in many ways in spite of any integration tools.

Most DAWs have decent basic libraris which can be somewhat useful, but being completely honest, if you're going to work on sound design, you're probably much better off purchasing third party libraries or tools which are going to be way richer than what most DAWs offer. Don't get me wrong, you can get results with almost anything, but having a SFX library is always going to help you save time.

An eclectic and expansive sound library provides a powerful source of material that can be used to complete the tasks at hand. However, it's this feature that I find narrows the field as to which DAW software works best. Because not all DAW software has the same sound library, and some might have sounds that could work better that another software doesn't. This helps to find the best option, but it could be easier to acquire third party sound effects library software.

In this particular field, some DAWs are certainly much more advanced than others, however, even in those not natively supporting some spatial or procedural features, there are always VSTs or tools you can obtain to get things going, and I dare say most of the best 'special' tools are not DAWs themselves. There are tons of amazing sound design softwares out there that can help you create amazing stuff like Sound Particles, Krotos' tools, and of course DSP programs like Max or PD, so definitely check those out.
