What jobs are most likely to be impacted by automation and generative AI?

Customer service could see a shift with AI chatbots handling basic queries. Even creative industries aren't exempt, as AI can generate written and visual content, affecting journalism and design jobs. In legal and financial sectors, AI's quick data and document analysis could impact paralegals and analysts. However, jobs requiring emotional intelligence, complex decision-making, and high-level creativity are less likely to be fully automated. As technology evolves, there will be a growing demand for uniquely human skills like empathy and problem-solving.

Automation and generative AI represent significant advancements in technology, reflecting a shift in how we approach problem-solving and creativity. While automation streamlines repetitive tasks, freeing up human effort for more complex and creative endeavors, generative AI opens up new frontiers in content creation. It's not just about automating what we already do; it's about creating what we never could before.

Generative AI facilitates automation, empowering human resources to focus on higher-productivity tasks, But recommend or mandatory human-in-loop approach for critical decisions, especially in healthcare. AI-powered chatbots redefine customer service, providing immediate support and transforming the customer experience through engaging conversations. Automation and generative AI impact diverse sectors; creative industries witness content generation, while legal and financial domains benefit from rapid data analysis. Despite technological advancements, roles demanding emotional intelligence and high-level creativity resist full automation, fostering a rising demand for uniquely human skills.

AI is not required for classic automation tasks - it only causes additional costs without any real benefit. The situation is different if the result is not always the same - when casting, removing adhesive residue, finding solder joints. As soon as I have a deviation in the process, an AI also makes it possible to automate this.

To me, I would say automation is about making things happen automatically, while generative AI is about creating new things. Both of these technologies are becoming increasingly powerful and are changing the way we live and work

Automation could lead to social challenges, such as increased unemployment in certain sectors and the psychological impact on those displaced from their jobs. There might be a need for new social policies, like universal basic income, to address these challenges. The rise of automation and AI also brings up ethical questions about the role of machines in our lives and work. Legal frameworks may need to be updated to address issues like liability in automated systems and the ethical use of AI.

Based on my current understanding of the Artificial Intelligence sector, I do not anticipate widespread job automation in the coming decades. Machine learning techniques are currently employed to automate tasks; however, they have their limitations. Machine learning struggles to extrapolate beyond the distribution of its training data, making it challenging to handle edge cases, also known as black swan events. The jobs that will witness full task automation are those characterised by predictable and repetitive tasks. Examples include factory packers, factory and manufacturing workers, cashiers, data entry clerks, and proofreaders.

It will start with the tasks where the tasks are repeated like in a factory. Because that's where scaling is possible and that's particularly interesting for every provider. But where is the end? Wherever there is a certain amount of added value and automation with AI is worthwhile, it will come at some point. It's just a question of time! Regulation is necessary here.

AI is not just a new technology hype, it's the new Industrial Revolution. Task-driven jobs and routine tasks will be automated. In the automotive sector, humans were replaced by robots in the production chain. In today's time, routine works will be automated by Generative AI. The most impacted professionals will be content creators, such as lawyers, designers, journalists, language translators, etc. and customer support agents.

Jobs are changing with tech. No need to worry. Cashiers, telemarketers, and drivers might see shifts, but here's what you can do: Learn new skills. Adapt. Automation is changing things, but you can grow with it. Self-checkouts, chatbots, and new tech are part of the deal. Governments and businesses are stepping in too. They're investing in education and retraining. So, yeah, challenges are there, but so are opportunities. Your future? It's about thriving in this new work era!

These roles encompass junior legal assistants, proofreaders, linguists, junior translators, stenographers, and trademark examiners. Furthermore, creative professionals, such as software developers, artists, and musicians, can also elevate their productivity by seamlessly integrating Artificial Intelligence tools into their workflows. This automation primarily derives from Generative AI's capability to produce text, images, and audio that closely resemble human creations.

While it's commonly assumed that routine, manual jobs are most vulnerable to automation, generative AI threatens jobs involving any computer screen-based profession. This is because work involving a computer screen continuously generates data that can be used for AI training. Therefore, the very nature of screen-based jobs not only exposes them to automation risks but also actively contributes to the sophistication of AI systems capable of performing these tasks. I advise those in creative professions to integrate AI tools into their workflow to enhance their work, rather than view them solely as a threat. Generative AI, while potentially disruptive, offers unique opportunities for innovation in fields requiring creativity and originality, such as art, writing, and design. Most smart high-paying jobs in legal, finance, IT, and science will be affected. But that's OK because we still have to manage those bots taken over. The low-paying ones in Health Care, Leisure, and Hospitality are safe. As for art, remember, perfection is imperfection.

Currently such tasks are those that are time consuming and/or repetitive especially those that involve reviewing or analyzing large amounts of data.

Test and play with tools. Ask questions. Find yourself a mentor. I've also been honing in on human traits that I feel are unique to us as humans. Relationship building, connection to oneself, creativity, social sales... Having a keen sense of who you are AND using AI to nurture that.... that's where the magic happens.

Embrace the development of soft skills. Employers are looking for folks who possess self awareness, emotional intelligence, curiosity and more. All of these skills complement AI. Be adaptable. It’s unlikely folks will stay in one career field let alone one job. Learn everything you can about AI. There is a wealth of resources to leverage and most are free.

Hallucinations. I was on a team once where we were tasked with gathering articles for a paper. I was happy to find a gap in our area making our work especially relevant. Unbeknownst to me one of my team mates used AI and generated dozens of fake articles and references. This is a bit scary to be honest.

Again, a bit of context here: What are the benefits and risks of the Internet? Like any other technological innovation, there is a tremendous potential for reducing errors, freeing people from mundane/ dull routine jobs of manual data cleansing, and empowering customer service professionals with the correct information at the right time. Risks? For sure. Careless use of AI could result in its proliferation in territories like Deepfakes, Plagiarism and, my personal favourite, AI-generated photography. But like the Internet, the devil is different from the technology or the tool; it is how people will use it.

My vision for AI-enabled future is that we will work less hours, produce the same economic output and because of that paid the same (if we don't pay people who will buy those products?). Benefits for the businesses are almost countless, shifting people's focus to value adding tasks, quality, 24/7 work by machines... Individual benefits include but not limited to time saving and spending time on more strategic activities. The ultimate risk will be to lose the expertise in technical systems and some of our skills if we go auto-pilot with everything. Example is the phone memory. 20 years ago I had many phone numbers in my memory but currently I don't even know my wife's second phone number, I just saved it and make the call from my phone.

Remember. Today’s Gen AI we are all using/experimenting with, is the worst version it will ever be. This is a rapidly developing technology. I believe all forms of work will be impacted in some way by this technology, perhaps indeed one day posing the question ‘what is a job’? Right now it’s a tech that isn’t replacing roles, but rather tasks. For those employees that lean-in, there is an opportunity to move from ‘knowledge class’ worker, to an ‘Ai class’ worker - adapt at knowing how the tools can augment your workflow and expand your ability to cross domains/widen the aperture of tasks you can no complete before delegation or passing to a different department.

With increase in automation levels, jobs in manufacturing, assembly line, agriculture, cleaning, and basic service industries will be taken over by automate robots. Data entry and basic data analysis roles, routine customer service tasks, especially those involving scripted interactions, will be automated using AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants. We may have automated transportation and delivery so those jobs may reduce.
