What are the key competencies of HRD professionals in a changing environment?

HR professionals should have expertise in training needs analysis, instructional design, training delivery, learning management systems, evaluation and assessment, talent development, change management, and continuous learning. These skills enable them to identify training gaps, design effective training programs, deliver training sessions, utilise learning management systems, evaluate training effectiveness, align development initiatives with talent strategies, manage change, and stay updated with industry trends.

Any HRD/CPO/Chief of staff (or whatever HR title you have) worth their mustard should not stagnate in their style of supporting a business and running a team. It's old hat in my view to say HRDs need to keep adapting to the change in working practices. Many HRDs do not read their own professional publication magazine (a shame as that highlights new technologies, new trends etc.) Many do not go to the CIPD conference and network. Many have barely changed anything about their office that they sit in since they frequented it. HR Leaders need to stay modern, HR Leaders need to be comfortable to try new methods at work, introduce new concepts as the world changes almost weekly.

One of the crucial aspects of Change management is identification of Change Agents, the champions. You pick people from every Vertical and department and make them early adopters. They in turn will engage more such people to catch up on the change. Experience has it, not to provide all the training up front as this is both over-whelming and inefficient. This is because we need to provide opportunities for Change Agents to put into practice what they have been taught as soon as they have experienced the training, so that they build new skills and influence others to adapt. Also equip the Change agents with centrally developed materials including slides and script so that they provide consistency of message across the network.

Bringing in objectively in the process is an important goal and hence analytics is important. Besides there are instances of disconnect between appraiser and appraisee where HR needs to get involved

Data Literacy is super important. Data isn't just the realm of your tech team; it's the North Star guiding HRD professionals too. People analytics can offer invaluable insights into employee engagement, learning outcomes, and productivity. If you're not comfortable around metrics and data, now is the time to get acquainted.

Absolutely, a key HRD competency is performance improvement, addressing gaps at all levels. In my experience best method to adopt is HR Balanced Scorecard.. When it comes to human behaviour too much of methods, or techniques sometimes become counter productive as one needs to have a totally different mindset ..Ability to perform and the confidence that with the ability gained I can improve performance, these two together can help in improving performance.. HR professionals are consultants who offer solutions to the management as per the business need. The more the solution is aligned with business objective and HR can establish ROI the more value addition HR has. HR needs to be consultative and have a flexible approach in offering solutions. Even within the same organization the team dynamics or issues might be different hence the true value is offering customized solutions.

It's all about communication. Tech Evangelists Here the opportunity is to demonstrate flexibility and initiative to test and adapt to new technology (AI/ ML are already knocking doors down) and influence stakeholders. Tech will also influence teams of future which will be more cross functional in nature and hence outcome based. 2. People Coach The next generation of employees will only be engaged through problem solving opportunities & hence will require participating style of management and will need coaching,that will need HR to ask right questions..

Many HR processes have changed and are continuing to change in the best practice methods of talent acquisition, learning and development, performance management, employee experience, strategic planning as well as many others. It really helps HR professionals to be voracious readers of business/industry books, newsletters, blog posts, industry publications as well as following key HR and business leaders on Linkedin. Basically anywhere were thought leaders and innovators are hanging out, the HR pro should be present. This practice is not only helpful for career progression but also for enabling early adoption of proven processes or tech. Good HR leaders become good by being the defacto goto for what's happening in people management.
