What are the key elements of a SPC plan and how do you develop one?

If you are implementing SPC on an existing process, you may already have some idea about which measurements truly affect a given product process... But if not, it is important to figure out just which measurements matter...

When choosing how to measure, it's needed to ensure the measurement equipment MSA is approved or acceptable to what it's being measured. Knowing the measurement variation before data collection is the guarantee that future decisions will be taken over actual process variation and not over measurement variation!

Make sure you have a current gage repeatability and reproducibility study on file to support use of the gaging device you are using.

To do this, you should be familiar with SPC cards and the principles of their use. There is not only the X average - range card :) The wrong determination of sampling frequency and volume also leads to wrong data analysis

Two things come to mind for this stage: operationalization and measurement system analysis. The consideration of proxy measurements may also be necessary. In any event, spend some time thinking about these things before charging off. Finally, advances in measurement systems may make legacy systems outdated.

You can do after the fact analysis using things like histograms... But you can also implement real time tools like SPC charts in software to get real time signals as to the state of your process...

Effectively controlling the process requires a robust framework that includes well-defined CTP and CTQ metrics with their USL and LSL limits, regular monitoring through statistical methods, and proactive problem-solving through RCA and Cpk analysis through the control charts. This comprehensive approach ensures sustained improvement, consistency, and regulatory compliance.

These steps are fine as a 50k ft template. There are many lower level elements to be decided too. Who is expected to drive each step? How much time will be needed on average? (So Production knows how many resources they are being asked to commit to get to the Control step.) What knowledge does each of the players need for success? How will the training get deployed and evaluated? (So that all are equipped for success. ) What should the deliverables be at the end of each step? What will be the criteria for being in a state of statistical control? (So that's is no mystery whether or not a step is complete for each CTQ.) And what & who will ensure constancy of purpose for an effort that many in Production will regard as church work?
