What are the key indicators for measuring circularity in your supply chain?

Measuring circularity in a supply chain involves assessing key indicators to gauge the extent of sustainable and closed-loop practices. Track the percentage of recycled or reused materials in production, emphasizing the reduction of virgin resource usage. Measure the longevity and durability of products to evaluate their lifespan and potential for reuse. Monitor the efficiency of waste management, focusing on the percentage of waste that is diverted from landfills through recycling or repurposing. Assess energy efficiency and emissions reduction initiatives, reflecting the environmental impact of the supply chain. Additionally, evaluate the design for disassembly and recyclability of products.

Key indicators for measuring circularity in your supply chain include the percentage of recycled materials used in production, the amount of waste generated per unit of output, the lifespan and reuse potential of products, the efficiency of reverse logistics processes, the level of collaboration with suppliers to reduce environmental impact, and the integration of renewable energy sources in operations. Additionally, tracking the carbon footprint and water usage throughout the supply chain provides insight into environmental sustainability. Evaluating these metrics enables businesses to gauge their progress towards achieving a more circular economy and identify areas for improvement.

Quantifying your material flows with indexes like those mentioned allows the measurement of the current state and then management of improvement to meet organizational goals. Circularity is all about the material flowing back into the production process (reuse/recycling), after the end of product life, to minimize the use of virgin resources to produce more products.

Efficient material usage, tracked through material flows, reduces resource depletion and minimizes waste, aligning with circular economy principles. Additionally, understanding waste generation points enables targeted interventions to reduce environmental impact. Product design considerations like modularity and recyclable materials in material flows promote longevity and recycling, fostering a more circular approach. These practices enhance resource efficiency, reduce environmental footprint, and contribute to responsible and sustainable supply chain management, vital for long-term business resilience and ethical operations.

Understanding material flows is crucial for identifying inefficiencies and opportunities for circularity. From my perspective, tracking and optimizing the flow of materials not only reduces waste but also minimizes environmental impact. It requires a detailed analysis of the types, quantities, and movement of materials throughout the supply chain.

Incorporating circularity within supply chain operations is critical for sustainable growth. A challenge we faced was accurately tracking and reducing energy consumption across diverse processes. By implementing a robust energy management system, we could monitor energy intensity and efficiency in real-time. This enabled us to identify inefficiencies, transition to renewable energy sources, and significantly lower our carbon footprint, aligning with our sustainability goals.

Circularity extends to energy consumption, encompassing direct and indirect use and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Metrics like energy intensity, efficiency, renewable energy share, and carbon footprint assess efforts in reducing demand, enhancing performance, and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. Monitoring these indicators guides sustainable practices, aligning with a circular approach to energy within the supply chain.

Regarding responsible consumption, there is always a chance to procure green and low-carbon energy sources such as Renewable energy. The integration of sustainable energy sources looks simple but is quite complex. Collaborative and active participation from all the users is required.

It is crucial for companies to measure energy consumption within the supply chain. However, for the implementation of circular strategies, it is important to consider not only the supply chain but the entire value chain, including the consumption of products and the recycling of resources. Fast and efficient collection of data along the value chain also on other sustainability aspects such as water consumption and the compromise of biodiversity will be necessary in order to minimize resource use and mitigate environmental impacts. The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) of the EU offers a promising and holistic approach for a comprehensive analysis of the value chain.

Circular economies are about more than just waste reduction; they aim to create value. From my perspective, value creation in circularity can be achieved through innovative business models that keep products and materials in use, thus designing out waste.

I agree. But also it should be considered, especially for startups in the materials space, the role of verified circularity metrics, such as recycled content of a given innovative material, to boost the valuation of the company.

Circularity is reflected in the value your supply chain generates for customers and stakeholders. Metrics like customer satisfaction, retention, loyalty, revenue growth, profitability, social impact, and environmental impact quantify the economic, social, and environmental benefits. Assessing these metrics guides efforts in delivering value, enhancing relationships, and creating positive outcomes—a crucial aspect of circularity in supply chain management.

In the context of responsibility and diversity, creating value in supply chains also requires a social perspective. Promoting job security, fair wages and diversity in the workplace not only contributes to ethical corporate governance, but also creates a positive working environment, which in turn increases productivity and innovation. As part of my surveys to create a mental health risk assessment, the aspect of diversity in the workplace was mentioned more frequently. One key element is to implement the issue of Socially Responsible Companies (ESR), an aspect that encompasses the elements of the environment (economic, social and natural (natural resources)), which by promoting green seals, will allow efficiency and awareness regarding the way in which natural resources are consumed, the circularity of the resources used in the production processes, and not generating a lot of waste that directly or indirectly affects the environment. Otherwise, the excessive consumption of natural resources will be perpetuated, and the circular economy will not be achieved.

It is a good start to assess whether there is investment in R&D projects dedicated to enhancing sustainability through the development of more recyclable materials, redesigning products for longer life cycles, or finding more efficient production methods that minimize waste.

I am a big fan of blockchain technology. It has the potential to revolutionise transparency and traceability in supply chains. By keeping an immutable record of transactions, companies can create a complete history of their supply chain. This creates transparency and promotes trust. We all agree the whole world is made up. Right from ourselves to all the material things. It is a part of innovation. Evolution thrives on innovation. The world is going through a transformation phase, and data shown over the last century tells us, we need to act with immediate response to bring things they we used to be. Innovation plays an important role and will be the driving force of the system. Concepts like Circular Economy only exist due to innovation. Human evolution would come to a halt if innovation ceases to exist. Keep Innovating, keep inspiring, keep transforming.

There is huge potential for innovation in the use of artificial intelligence on sustainability (AIoS) to drive product development, process improvement and business model transformation. Analyzing the impacts, risks and opportunities in one's company, but also in its value chain, is part of the double materiality analysis that will be mandatory for all companies in the EU from 2025 as part of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The resulting data set of more than 200,000 companies creates great opportunities for the development of a corresponding AI solution.

I'm always surprised at the general lack of collaboration between stakeholders within the supply chain and even between various departments in the same company. In my opinion, ensuring proper transparent communication and collaboration is crucial to co-create and implement circular solutions.

Collaboration among all stakeholders is vital for circularity to work. My experience suggests that partnerships between suppliers, manufacturers, and customers can lead to shared circular objectives and more sustainable outcomes through shared knowledge and resources.

"There is no I in the team". That proverb weighs so much importance! Without partnership, collaboration, and team effort this race toward sustainable transformation has no standing. Collaboration helps you understand, educate, and experience, different aspects and perceptions. An idea can only be made into success if there is a team collaboration that works on it.

In my experience, companies that actively engage with stakeholders and cultivate diverse partnerships tend to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. For instance, a challenge we faced was siloed information, which we overcame by implementing cross-functional teams and regular stakeholder meetings, leading to improved solution co-creation and resource optimization.

In order to reach an aligned approach on circular actions between the different stakeholders it is necessary to consider both the company (micro) and the network (meso) level. On micro level, actions must be coordinated in order to collect and share empirical data, build and share knowledge, negotiate partnerships and facilitate network actions. On meso level, a circular or collaborative value proposition must be envisioned, co-creation and workshops conducted and network actions coordinated in order to grow the operating range of the network. The ultimate goal is the inclusion of (probably not yet circular) market leaders and therefore a rollout of the circular culture into linear supply chains.

Don’t do circularity for the sake of circularity. Circularity is one set of strategies that can be used to achieve a specific business outcome: reduced resource consumption, reduced emissions, reduced cost, etc. Be sure and tie your actions on circularity into the actual outcomes you want to achieve or you will inevitably end up doing circularity for circularity’s sake. I don’t care how circular your business or your product is. I care about the impact that your efforts are driving.

Product lifespan: Average time a product remains in use before becoming waste. Longer lifespan implies better resource utilization and customer satisfaction. Repair and maintenance rates: Frequency and cost of repairs and maintenance for a product during its lifespan. Lower rates indicate higher product quality and durability. Reuse potential: Proportion of products or components that can be easily reused in their original form after use. Closed-loop recycling: Ability to recycle materials back into the same product type instead of downcycling for different applications

Localisation - Circularity is most effective when it is localised. Many circularity models today are mirroring the global supply chain, instead we should find ways to source, consumer, reuse/repurpose/recycle materials as close to home as possible.

Other considerations might include regulatory compliance, customer expectations, and technological advancements. It’s my belief that staying ahead of these factors and being adaptable to change are essential for a successful transition to a circular supply chain.

In assessing circularity, it's crucial to recognize that transitioning from a linear to a circular supply chain can be complex. A challenge we faced was integrating lifecycle assessments to measure the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle. By adopting a digital tool for real-time lifecycle data, we improved our decision-making process, enabling us to design products for longevity and recyclability, thus enhancing our circularity metrics.
