But how can you apply Lean Six Sigma in your own work environment? And what are the key skills and competencies that you need to become a successful Lean Six Sigma practitioner? In this article, we will answer these questions and give you some tips on how to use Lean Six Sigma tools and techniques in your quality management projects.

1 Define the problem

The first step in any Lean Six Sigma project is to define the problem that you want to solve. This means identifying the customer's needs and expectations, the current performance and gaps, and the scope and objectives of the project. You also need to form a cross-functional team that will work on the project and assign roles and responsibilities. Before going HAM on a gap analysis, truly define the requirements you need/want to meet and be prepared to assess exactly where you are and what you are not meeting. Without project, product, process, system….requirements, analysis is just a shot in the dark.

As part of the analysis, identify sources of variation within the process. This includes both common cause variation (inherent to the process) and special cause variation (due to external factors or anomalies).
