Unauthorized devices is not related to wireless networks, per say. Network Access Control or (NAC) should be applied across wired and wireless networks. After all, users often do not need network connectivity to each other's devices.

In my opinion, it all starts with a lack of strategy and planning. When you don’t really know the intended use and value of a wireless network, you don’t know the potential risks and therefore the security controls to mitigate those risks. Without measuring risks you can’t determine the level of controls you need for the wireless network, which leads you to pick controls randomly and apply defaults configurations.

In my professional experience, basic oversights like weak encryption, open networks, default credentials, and weak passwords (like phone numbers) are still common vulnerabilities in wireless networks. On the advanced side, supply chain attacks, often state-sponsored, target network infrastructure at its core. IoT device vulnerabilities also pose significant risks due to their security weaknesses and widespread use, making them easy targets for attackers. One of the critical success factors that is often overlooked/ignored in sustainable cybersecurity is lack of Cybersecurity Governance Framework that covers in context network security (including the unique characteristics associated with WiFi) and integration across supply chain network risks to the entity.
