Every problem can be broken into components. These components can be divided into variables and non variables. The non variables are different for different problem. But these are clearly identifiable. The non variables sometimes termed non negotiables do not pose problems. The variables are those that are indeterminable and often non visible . This is the complex part. The more the number of variables the greater is the complexity of the problem. When we say we are finding solutions to a problem , what we mean is we are finding the relationship between the variables and the non variables. In complex problems ,the variables are very difficult to identify. Experience in that field would to some extent help in identifying these.

Choosing the right problem solving model will depend upon 2 factors: 1. Complexity - Clarity of Problem 2. Complexity - Clarity on Solution And if you draw a plot having above 2 factors on x and y axis - you will find multiple approaches/ models. For example if you have high degree of clarity on problem and high degree of clarity on solution the best model is JDI i.e. just do it. Another situation when you have clarity on problem but root cause is not known you may consider DMAIC Model. The key is to really break complex problems into smaller challenges with defined scope and then solve it. Models are multiple - logical application of the right one is the unique differentiator.
