Based on my industry practical and theoretical knowledge I am able to see a much larger perspective. In order to withstand attacks today, one has to approach security from a wholistic perspective. A multilayered security approach that combines network, application, administrative, physical, as well as on-going security awareness training are necessary. Including healthy Leadership qualities & Security controls.

The best way to stay up-to-date on network security standards and protocols is to read industry publications, attend security conferences, and attend webinars. You can also join professional networking groups to stay informed. Getting the right certifications and continuing training can also help you stay on top of the ever-changing network security landscape. It’s also important to stay active in the security community. Join online forums or attend local meetups to share your expertise and best practices.

I think finding really strong discord groups can be a game-changer for this. The CyberMentor is a great one as well and the Tryhackme are both great places to learn and discuss new topics in Cybersecurity.

What I would add here with my personal experience is that online communities and forums are the best for keeping up because they are most real time. The contributors in online forums and community don't need approval of management before publishing anything there so you get to hear there the true situation and working level issues and solutions So for most authentic knowledge from people who are working day in and day out be member of various communities and forums as they give the most updated picture without any filters.

Huntress Labs has a really fascinating Monthly webinar. for threat hunting, I would recommend it to just about anyone. The only downside is someone scheduled it for the 2nd Tuesday of the month 😂They forgot about Patch Tuesday!!! Either way, it's still a really cool webinar I would recommend for anyone. I also would make sure to check out Vendor webinars those have been super useful for me as they give better insight into tools that I use and can drastically improve my efficiency when using tools.

Be proactive. Dont’t just sit there and wait for somebody else to come up with “standards” and controls you should be compliant with. Don’t become someone who’s merely “checking the box”. Know your network, take ownership, take responsibility, know every aspect of it, know the threat/attack vectors and find out what the “generally accepted standards” are missing. Fill in the gap.
