What are the most effective ways to adapt to new technology in Lean Manufacturing?

New Technologies means change and above always brings anxiety in stakeholders as soon as they know about it. Mostly everyone gets thoughts on how change will affect them personally and professionally. So above should be well understood and thought out with proactive actions before new technology plans are rolled out. Team members should be involved communicated and progress should be well monitored preferably through well structured Project Management methodologies to achieve end goal. It would also be desirable to capture learning’s for future similar implementations

It’s most important to gain buy-in for the new technology. Not only from your executive leadership team, but also from the shop floor. You will need the new tech to be supported and accepted. There should be an issue or need that the new technology addresses and overcomes. Example: Boost production, reduce downtime, increase safety, streamline quality, eliminate scheduling issues, forecasting, margins, throughput, etc. Keep NEXT-GEN in mind with new technology as it will need to integrate well with existing systems, connect workers, and enhance data visibility.

New technology is very welcome and is also a need of the hour for increased reliability, zero defects quality, inbuilt autonomation, reducing human interface, breaking bottlenecks for enhancing line capacity and productivity through Streamlining flow, making the task easier & simpler! Must safeguard for maintainability, cost of maintenance and versatility!

There needs to be a defined problem that the new technology will solve root cause and/or add value. Need to assess the value the technology brings to the product, processes, company, people and customer. The value must cover the cost of the new technology.

Adapting to new technology in Lean Manufacturing involves fostering a continuous improvement culture, risk management, providing comprehensive employee training, forming cross-functional teams, implementing pilot programs, embracing data-driven decision-making, integrating Lean tools, and maintaining open communication are essential.

An old saying: "Ask 10 economists for a forecast, you'll get 12 different answers" ... talking of 'Lean principles' in a culture that doesn't demand or even expect 'Principle based practice' (i.e. we talk of values, principles etc., then act as our mood takes us without any further reference to them or discipline over ourselves), is a bit like this. Establishing a common view of 'Respect', such that is shows in conduct, takes effort... What's wrong, is evident in these words. An assumption that we need to 'Solicit' feedback and ideas, tells us all we need to know about our culture. If we genuinely respected our people, so they were actually 'included' and that wasn't a step in a project plan, their ideas and input would happen naturally.

There is no "one size fits all" solution. There will always be some hesitancy and resistance to something new. I like to suggest that team members that are directly impacted are involved early and often. Help them to see how the new technology can offer advantages and see what great questions they will come up with (that you may not be aware of). Make sure when there is training it is offered in a way in which people learn... Visual, hands on, verbal, etc. Involve, listen and learn.

Yes lessons learnt are very much important and implement things with risk assessment and know the unknown certainty. Risk assessment is most important before implementing the new tech somewhat if we fail then the backup plan must be ready.

Num mundo 4.0 ordem a competição, eficiência, custo, entrega e qualidade andam de "mãos" dadas ou não com o tempo, é preciso um ponto de equilíbrio entre produzir com eficácia e adaptabilidade do tempo disposto para alcançar um bom desempenho sem comprometer o aprendizado que a manufatura enxuta precisa.

Here we run into deeply imprinted beliefs about leadership, goal setting, budget control and project management. Projects are to be delivered to 'Time and budget' ... as soon as we assume (timeline), the inevitable adjustments, or excess pressure on people to hit the stage gates, fear & defences are going to demand some people 'blame' others. To be open to 'experiment' and 'learn' from mistakes, there can be no 'Blame' or judgement, just openness, collaboration and inquiry. Where front line implementation requirements, e.g. data migration, are judged by a senior manager, who is judged by the boss, who is judged by investors, all against a time estimation, we fail to create the right conditions for optimal brain function. BTFA before PDCA!

We can do the internal as well as External benchmarking to improve our results/ business. We can also horizontally deploy the standards of benchmarking sites for smooth implementation at Site. After implementation we can have more focus on its further improvement in the process which we have horizontally deployed once it got sustained.

Where any such action / practice, follows an initial negative emotional reaction to the idea of 'New Technology', the brains involved are already 'framing' the practical steps through their defensive 'WIIFM' lens, in defence of themselves. This makes it 10X harder to provide sufficient sensory stimulus to the brains involved, to see them to shift from an emotional 'Away from' response, to a 'Towards' response. If your benchmarking visit reinforces fears, e.g. a tour guide says "of course, implementation was a ball-ache, took longer than we imagined and we didn't all understand the benefits, but it's working OK now", your team will come back less enthused about the project. We MUST understand brain function if projects are to be successful.

We're living in a world, where much of what we openly accept and promote (in posts like this, and in our country's industrial strategy), i.e. 'best practice', triggers the evolved human brain to take a defensive position. How we act (leaders / project managers), in line with our assumptions and beliefs, imprinted over years of experience & training, provides in-bound sensory stimulus to others, which alters the neurological chemical mix (emotions) in ways that don't compliment the outcome objective. In this neurological state (of survival / defence) those we would like to embrace and support change, don't, purely because of the way their brain is designed to keep them safe. This is why we so often talk of failed change and disengagement.

Before applying any new technology first analyse your supply chain end to end .What is expected ? Is it fulfilling your requirement or not? What are future requirement and trends is it capable to fulfill that if both answer is yes than do VSM and just apply basic lean tools and reduce waste no new technology required.If any answer is no than you need to do VSM waste analysis and remove waste by appying most easy way.Applying new technology by seeing other is also using is waste of money if you not analyze your system waste and future and current requirement properly.Even Elon Musk Tesla owner also tell excessive automation is their mistake.
