Over the years, the most important focus I found is: Inspire people Build strong & healthy habits and above all make sure to deliver on time, defect free and put your heart into it.

One:One is one of the key to success. Ops need to get closer to employees in order to empower and develop their performance.

Everyone who responded is correct...so thinking beyond the norm--remember the scene from Pretty Woman when RIchard Gere was helping Julia Roberts handle how to handle a snail with style? I suggest reversing roles in a training session and have your team member be a guest...from entering to being seated. Observe if they really unserstand working their way outside to inside when choosing what flatware to use...how to single with the placement of knife and fork, hat wine glass should be used and where to place and the end of the meal, all the way for asking for the check. They will learn more from their mistakes as from a traditional training session. Just a thougt.

One of the hardest things to do for most owners of restaurants and bars is to delegate. They have the incorrect idea that they are the only ones who can do something properly. That mindset is detrimental to the culture of your team. When you do not trust your employees to do their job, it makes them less motivated to perform at the highest level. At the same time, it prevents the owner from being able to focus on longer-term goals like strategic planning, forecasting, and building the foundation for future success. The only way to be effective in ownership is to delegate, starting with the most mundane daily tasks and working until all daily operational tasks are delegated.

While Fast moving environments like F&B needs immaculate workforce management which can be achieved with proper delegation of tasks, moving team members across all job roles so whenever needed additional resourcing can be used in needed areas.

When you greet a customer, you make eye contact, smile and use their name (if you know it, if you don't then you should get it), say hello. You should treat your employees the same way, and maintain a policy that all employees act similarly with other employees. All employees are valued the same as all customers are valued.

Simply saying, "you did a good job tonight" can be enough to make an employee feel appreciated. In fact, you should have some kind comment for your employee every day. "Thank you for coming in" when they arrive at work. "Thank you for the good job today" at the end of the day. If you ask "how are you?" then listen to the response and comment further. Everyday is not the same and simple recognition from supervisors or owners can go a long way.

Seek and reward problem solvers. The talent to create a feasible, profitable solution is more important than the ability to point out a problem. Operations make a food service establishment(s) work. Financial controls and menu choices must fit into an operations model to succeed.

Inspire a positive upbeat environment, but be aware that everybody is not upbeat all the time. One of my bartenders needed surgery and would be out for 6 weeks. I was a local small bar. She was having a hard time being upbeat with so much uncertainty over whether she would have a job. I sent her home with pay. I told her that not only would I hold her job for her, but I would also pay her salary for the full 6 weeks she was out. I took her shifts behind the bar. I gave her, her salary and half the tips (to her surprise). When she returned she was a loyal rock star. Always listen to your employees as if they were family and be a problem solver, but always remember you are still their boss and dependence for survival is mutual.
