What are the most effective ways to communicate your strengths to your boss for a promotion in IT services?

I was assigned to work in two IT Divisions in different agencies during my federal career. I was not an IT expert, far from it. But, I was an admin and HR expert, and in that capacity I earned my keep. Highly technical people, like those in IT, prefer not to be distracted with administrative clap trap. Being an expert in administrative trivia, such as how to fashion position descriptions and performance plans, allowed me to be of service to the IT hierarchy. It also helped that I understood how to motivate worker bees who equally were uninterested in things like performance plans. I kept track of things ensuring everyone had a performance plan at ratings time. In essence, I made myself useful for those things the techies hated.

1. Showcase Your Achievements: Regularly update your boss about your accomplishments. This could be in the form of a weekly or monthly report. Highlight how your work has positively impacted the team or the company. 2. Take Initiative: Show your willingness to take on more responsibilities. This could be in the form of volunteering for new projects, suggesting improvements, or helping colleagues. This shows your commitment and leadership skills.

En realidad es bastante complejo, cada empresa espera como minimo que el personal se mantenga actualizado, y en la medida que va adquiriendo experiencia es obvio que debe ser más capaz en términos de eficiencia. No obstante siempre recuerdo el principio de peter y como en mi experiencia en un alto porcentaje se cumple "todo puesto tiende a ser ocupado por un empleado que es incompetente para desempeñar sus obligaciones". Y es que cuando alguien es muy bueno en lo que hace, es muy difícil pensar en quien pueda reemplazarlo sin sacrificar la productividad.

Then, you can use the feedback to identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and take action to improve your performance and address any gaps or issues. By seeking feedback and acting on it, you can show your boss that you are open to learning, growing, and adapting to changing needs and expectations.

I agree with all of this, but I would not seek for promotion unless I could demonstrate ROI. When you include this in your presentation or material to discuss, you are already more self-aware and confident in your request, as to help your boss to accept and take it up.
