The first and foremost step after establishing the team is to empower them with Why, What and How? “Why” provides the reason behind formation of the team? Collaborate and establish consensus about vision, mission and strategy. “What” provides the team knowledge about Crown Jewels and critical assets. Learn compliance requirements and provide team members with required training, knowledge and responsibilities. Use RACI to establish relationships within and across the broader teams. “How”pertains to daily aspects of the work routines. Establish process, procedures & guidelines that enables the team members to work as one cohesive unit. Test and adjust as technology, regulatory and compliance landscape changes. The culture needs to support people being open and honest if a mistake is made - the least likely person to make that mistake again is themselves, and lessons can be shared with others.

It is important to acknowledge staff as our most important resource and that they know better than anyone what the culture and work climate is like. They should be involved in projects to improve Security culture thus inspiring them to become anbassadors. Just culture is key; create a culture where staff feels safe to report own mistakes to minimise impact and mitigate similar incidents. Commend them for their integrity and provide them with feedback.

Training, Training, Training this is the key. I like to have training at least once a month on security breaches. Either a one hour briefing on the latest security topic or sometimes it's just a Security Fact sheet sent to each member's email. Try to keep the briefing to the point. Make sure you start on time and finish on time. It's so easy to get focused on your job at hand you forget about security.

By this, companies will be able to define the needed regulatory and compliance policies that satisfy and maintain their business services. In-addition, guiding by well-known CyberSecurity Frameworks; eg. CIS, that align and mapped to the other compliance standards to accelerate and support enforcing proper policies according to the maturity level of the team.

The best way is to implement physical and technical preventive controls. To take it a step further, make sure key activities/access require dual person control.

If security administration is not deterministic, then likewise expect non-deterministic outcomes.

Prevention is an ideal but reality often shows that it is not possible to prevent incidents and data breaches all the time from a variety of reasons: sophisticated malicious threat actors and advanced malware (0-days), loss of concentration of employees (e.g. when multi-tasking), asset or security control misconfigurations made manually, legacy business-required hardware and applications, etc. Timely detection of developing incidents is therefore crucial - the sooner the better in terms of damage control to the organization. Invest in training the team in incident response, esatblish detection and response capability (SIEM, SOAR, UEBA, honeypots/deceptive tech., perform Breach&Attack Simulations,...) or implement an MDR service of an MSSP.

Specific to the security team, they should work on understanding the business so they can determine what is expected activity and what activity should be prevented or flagged as suspicious. Keeping up to date on evolving threats and vulnerabilities is also very important. All of this should start with a good risk assessment. Knowing your risk posture will help you to understand what types of threats your company faces. It also allows you to focus resources on the more important areas.
