What are the most effective ways to retain audiences with video content?

Give them something meaningful! Novelty, bright lights and colours only keep people for the first few seconds. If you want to retain an audience, not just for the full ad, but for months later, then you have to make it meaningful. Build from the ground up: depth of character, relatable and human stories, told in a way that isn't surface but actually goes deeper. Deep, honest, meaningful human-centred stories. Not celebrities and trendy music. If you give people something with more thought and meaning behind it than what they're used to, it'll stick with them way beyond the initial viewing. It could even change their life.

One thing I've found useful is taking into consideration how your audience consumes your video content. Some people may be in the bathroom, at 6 am in the morning, on their phone. Adjusting your content based on this aspect is definitely something to consider.

Content is king. The content needs to be good otherwise all of the flashy headlines and stupid thumbnails become meaningless.

Do what I call '360 degree' storytelling. Start with the hook, your best piece of content. Then dive into the human story and masterfully craft it. Build to the crescendo with emotion and make sure your payoff lands. Your last frame needs to be as good as your first. That formula should land you some solid engagement.

Stop being a copy cat. Start creating content from within. Values are much more important than having and audience hooked for the first 3-5 seconds. I think media agencies and brands focused in the wrong direction far too long. Give us value and quality. Give us something to talk about and stop reproducing trends. Let us stop the blind reproduction of content to "bind" our audience. Let us create for a long-lasting future and relationships.

The first 5 seconds are really all the matters nowadays. That may be a bit of an exaggeration but honestly if you plan your editing out that way, you will ensure the best retention for your content.

Storytelling in video is an amazing tool to keep your audience engaged. With that said, come up with a way to tell the story and I fully agree you must be introducing the reason for your video very quickly or else your audience will not stay engaged. Many make mistakes in the beginning of their video and thus viewers will turn away.

I've found that starting with a question that people would be curious to know the answer to (through the video) can help increase retention. Moreover, mentioning the most powerful sentence of the video, or the crux, in the first 3-5 sentences could evoke interest and spark a conversation, even if the viewer doesn't agree with the statement made.

Videos can be boaring if no creativity employed. Avoid too long videos and make sure within few minutes the video is already making sense, it is important also to look at the targeted audience so that the creativity will match. If the video intends youth there are languages that match youth and can attract them to watch, if you target adults make sure you use creativity that matches that age as well as children.

Simplicity. Golden ratio rules. Showing archetypal relationships and universal problems. Correct use of film language grammar and accentuating the correct things.

Create a series of content. Today we see this most commonly through social media platforms that ask the same 3-5 questions to any and everybody. It’s simple and to the point but the subject matter is the hook and people are always curious to know what other people are saying and thinking. Keeping this same design with each piece of content allows the viewer to subconsciously keep coming back or stop what they’re doing when the content comes up on their feed because it’s something they’re familiar with already and they know they’ll most likely get something new each time. We often try to reinvent the wheel and do something extravagant, but sometimes clear and concise content can do everything you need it to do, and more!

STORY. Think only about the story not gadgets or technique. Telling a good story is far and away the most important part of a good video. Once you have that, just tell THAT story the best you can. A good story can elevate bad technique, but no technique will make a bad story good. Some movie studios ignore this and try and compensate with a larger marketing budget. Don’t be that guy. Be better.

When drafting a script, it's important to find a balance between clarity and maintaining a human touch. You want your script to feel authentic, not robotic like something created by ChatGPT. At the same time, clear language is important. You don't want to ramble on aimlessly.

Utilizing a variety of shots, angles, and editing techniques every 5-7 seconds ensures a visually stimulating experience. I think it's important to determine the video outcomes early on. What do you want your viewers to feel? What do you want them to think about? Are you trying to convince them of something? Do you want to strengthen their connection to the subject? Is there something you want them to learn? One video can't do it all, and if you try to aim for 5 outcomes your audience will likely feel lost or just not connect. Ideally, your CTA at the end of the video should match the outcome you're going for. I think CTAs can come at different times to be most effective but you have to build credibility first.

In my experience, one of the most impactful planning decisions is the CTA. Video is one of the most powerful storytelling tools across the customer journey, so be strategic about where you want them to go. What is your goal with the video and what do you want them to do after they watch it? Do you want them to subscribe, follow your channel, or buy a new product? Make sure the CTA is simple, clear, and there’s only one CTA. Also, don’t forget to optimize your links for channel usage and measure performance. A favorite test is to sprinkle evergreen videos across distribution channels and tweak CTA for usage.

Having attention always needs to serve a purpose. You will never get an outcome if you do not ask for it. Whether that's a like, a share, or a follow or asking someone to subscribe to a newsletter or buy your product - if you do not ask for it, you'll never get it. The key is not to ask too early. You have to build some rapport and a connection with the viewer before you can ask for a commitment on their side of things. Someone watching your video is giving you their most valuable resource on this earth, time, so be respectful and offer value, build a connection first, and then ask your viewer for a further commitment after those two boxes have been checked.

Calls to action are opportunities to get people thinking and to change perspectives. If you get people curious they will go looking for more on their own. If you try and trick or manipulate them they might never watch again.

Sounds like this refers to your trailer or teaser... Your trailer or teaser or both still determine if your audience will go see your film... It is a very personal connection... Trailers and teasers are actually very personal to every individual... If I watch what I consider a kick ass trailer or teaser it won't matter what anyone tells me I'll go see the film regardless... Ultimately is just you and the film...

Recently, I've found that there needs to be just as much time invested into this portion of the process (optimizing), as creating the video itself and should be part of the planning process from the get-go. Not an afterthought. Those tags, captions, thumbnails can be the determining factor of whether that video will successfully hit the algorithm and reach your audience. Some A/B testing might help you find out what resonates best with the broader viewership. But circle these items into your planning process at the beginning.

Optimizing content for various platforms is essential, but it's equally important to strategize your production day to generate platform-specific content efficiently. Prioritize aspect ratios in your pre-filming planning, as these will dictate your shooting approach and influence the visual composition. Strategically design your set to facilitate the capture of additional content snippets, enabling you to produce not just a singular piece but a suite of materials. These should vary in length and format, tailored to suit the distinct requirements of all platforms showcasing your product. This approach enhances content diversity, ensuring a broad and effective digital presence.

I agree optimizing for each platform is optimal. No pun intended. 😂 Video and movie marketing comes down to a marketing plan. An effective marketing plan includes using the different tool sets you choose well. These tools range from SEO / search engine optimization all the way to hiring a circus and a marching band to walk right down the street and into the circus tent all to create awareness. The key is to figure out your toolsets and how to use them earlier than later even if that means asking for help or paying someone to help you. Keep in mind that the rules / algorithms of each platform and search engines changes often all to keep us feeding the machine to entertain the masses. 😎🎥

One thing I've realized is important but easy to overlook is customizing your content for each individual platform you are posting it on. This could be as simple as creating a shorter cut for reels or Tik Tok or as complex as changing the aspect ratio. Whatever suits the platform is best for audience retention and engagement.

One thing I have found helpful is tailoring my content to different platforms. Facebook has a different audience from Instagram or TikTok. When I was representing a Bar. I often found that community-based posts were better published on Facebook. Whereas "Foodie" posts (at the time) were better for Instagram. Planning this content in pre-production is useful. For live streams, use a program that turns your sound into captions to make your content accessible to those who are hearing impaired.

My answer is simple. Make high quality, authentic content and people will watch and come back for more! There is no silver bullet here. Wish there was one though :-)

Say one thing. Don't shoehorn in every feature. Just say one thing. You can watch a car advert and no know the mpg. You can watch a perfume ad and no know the ingredients. Yet Brian, head of the coding team, wants to add two lines into the video script talking about the new API.

Set the context before you get to the content. People do not buy what you sell buy why you sell it! The relevance of the content is what people connect with. Hence understanding the emotional need of the content, the environment it is set in, the socio-political paradigm and the relatability of the characters through which the messaging is set determines the success. Obviously, the craft, and the packaging are very important without saying.

Authenticity is something that cannot be measured as easily using analytical tools, yet over time, people gravitate towards organizations that truly represent what they say they represent. Stay true to your word and remain authentic and it will breathe life through your messaging.
