In Pakistan, poverty graduation programmes mostly use an official poverty score card of about 60 indicators. We, at Pakistan's Rural Support Programmes that implement the largest such programmes, have learnt that results from such instruments need to be validated through Community Organisations. People make changes in the results collectively, identifying the most deserving as per their local context.

There are various methods to measure poverty in their programs: 1. Income and Expenditure Assessments through Community organizations. 2. Poverty Indices and Scales: Using established poverty indices like the Human Development Index (HDI) or Poverty Severity Index (PSI) to gauge the severity and depth of poverty. 3. Qualitative Research: Conducting interviews, focus groups to understand the lived experiences and challenges faced by communities in poverty. 4. Community Feedback and Participation through surveys or participatory workshops. It allows social workers to create a comprehensive understanding of poverty and tailor effective programs to address its underlying causes.

I think poverty is relative in the local context , but in rural life if we consider who gives zakat to whom ? All the deserving recipients of zakat in a village are poor which even a community organisation can verify getting guidance from the local imam e masjid. I have an experience of distributing zakat through a verified list which has been appreciated by the whole community.

My favorite measurement reports are the ALICE Report by United Way and the Out of Reach report generated by the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Each report talks about people in a holistic lens. It's not simply how much a person earns but taking that pause and looking at the whole family unit. Recognizing that one extended family member's financial struggles can at times directly impact everyone in their support system. In summary the long term impact of poverty is interconnected when we begin to analysis poverty at the intersectionality of trauma and multigenerational poverty/ wealth.
