In my experience I have found documentation allows you to move on to bigger and better things, I know a lot of people who believe that if they are the only person that knows how a technology works or how something is configured it makes them special and that their skillset is essential to a system running effectively. My point is over time systems are replaced and technology evolves, so make sure you document the systems you look after so that you to can evolve with the technology rather than getting stuck in a time warp and eventually becoming worth less than you could be.

The addition of documentation process in our daily activities enhances the quality as well as the productivity at the same time. Let’s take an example. Assume some of new resources are on- boarded to provide support for some of the applications. If documentation and records are in place then training them would be much more easier plus they can refer that while executing certain projects. Another good example is the Change Management that almost every projects follow where every minute change is recorded and executed post double eye check. Hence, Documentation plays vital role in every projects.

YES! Documentation! Unfortunately, we don’t have the same memory as the devices we manage. Not only is it a good practice to document your day/week/monthly progress, but documenting problems along with your success is very important. Sometimes, we get lost in the motions of work, and we forget the great things we’ve done. Document achievements and milestones for your resume, and you’ll thank yourself later! Last but not least, documentation can reduce response time. I use a SOP (Standard operating Procedure.) This can have different names but I refer to it as the IT “admin guide.” or “IT Bible”. Admin guides are especially helpful for routine tasks! Troubleshoot, document, repeat!

In my past life as a sysadmin, how well my subordinates could keep the lights on while I am not there is a great way of measuring and tracking my progress. These decisions, while still important, offer more flexibility and can be approached with a degree of experimentation.

I think an ability to learn and admit your limitations is a great asset. You may have ups and downs and it's important to take a couple of breathers in between so we don't get burned out.

A bar I used to measure progress back in the early days of the MCSE was exams passed. Each exam was specific to a knowledge area. After a while Microsoft started introducing change a such a fast pace, it seemed as soon as you finished passing one certification you had to start studying for the new version. Since I was paying for the exams myself, I eventually decided to switch to CPE based certifications like CISSP. Now maintaining the education for the certification is the measuring stick.
