An example I enjoy using, is I throw up a line graph with the number of people killed by venomous snakes, with another unlabeled metric that is almost perfectly correlated… I get the audience to then guess what the metric is. From there I give them a clue that it has something to do with bees. Let them guess some more, usually with some very probable examples like number of bee stings causing death etc. I then reveal that it is the number of letters in the winning word for the scrips national spelling bee… It explains spurious regression, and teaches the lesson that, while it’s tempting to let the data think for you, this can be dangerous especially in today’s world where there is an abundance of data
