It’s important to ensure that the instructional design aligns closely with the learning objectives to ensure relevance and effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes.

For effective instructional design, get the student doing it as soon as possible, as much as possible, for as long as possible. Don't waste a lot of time talking at them about it, they need to be hands on practicing the skill. Then ask them how they think they could do it better.

If you don't know Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory, then I highly suggest you invest your time in learning it. It is truly the most important learning theory for training design. The brain learns the same way for every human, and this theory helps understand how the brain learns new knowledge/skills, why we perceive differences in learning capabilities, and how to design training that works for everyone.

Whenever I see the term "adult learning principles" defined, I struggle to see how these principles are unique to adult learners. Most impactful teaching--from elementary school on--respects the learner's autonomy, provides clear and meaningful learning outcomes, uses real world scenarios, encourages active participation, collaboration, reflection. I might use simpler vocabulary with younger learners, but the principles don't change.

For adult learning, I would suggest using Merrill's first principles. It's the perfect blueprint for design. Honestly, it works really well for k-12 too in the hands of a good teacher. The principles - Start with the problem or task, Activate learning, Follow this with Demonstration, Provide opportunity to Apply learning and finally, Integrate the learning at work or real life. Highly recommend reading the white paper by David Merrill.

Aligning the Instructional Systems Design (ISD) model with stakeholders' preferred level of engagement is essential for successful implementation. For instance, the Sequential Approximation Model (SAM) requires active stakeholder involvement throughout iterative cycles of development, making it less suitable for hands-off stakeholders. In contrast, a more linear model like ADDIE might be preferable for stakeholders seeking a more structured and hands-off approach. Understanding stakeholders' engagement preferences ensures that the chosen ISD model fosters collaboration and communication, maximizing stakeholder buy-in and ultimately leading to more effective and successful outcomes.

Using differentiation which leads to development of each learner.And also documenting the levels and progress gives access to the next facilitator to support learning of individual learner.

ADDIE and SAM are not instructional DESIGN models--they are instructional DEVELOPMENT models. More relevant for creating high-quality instructional designs would be models like Cathy Moore's Action Mapping model, or Michael Allen's CCAF (Context, Challenge, Activity, and Feedback) model. Again, your goal is to create training that drives learner practice. Most of the course should be presenting learners with situations for which they must exercise the skills they are learning in the class. That means fact-based questions should be minimized and action-oriented questions like "What should you do in this situation?" or "What do you think, do you need a permit to enter this space?" should be maximized.

Including multiple forms of multimedia with varying types of interactions is crucial for learning. Research shows it boosts knowledge retention and transfer. Sight and sound are vital, though passive, while active engagement through writing, speaking, and interactive media is more likely to demonstrate higher order thinking. All this said, the research on leveraging "preferred" learning modalities to enhance learning is quite mixed and even contrasting. The best in modern research suggests that learning via multiple modalities enhances the learning of ALL learners (pending accessibility issues because of disabilities). In general, your learners NEED to hear, see, write, speak, and move content in most courses and lessons, it's not a bonus.

This piece is critical to ensuring that learning modules are impactful. We often hear buzz words or trends in the L&D industry that contradict what studies have shown to be true. Adding bells and whistles can often muddy the message and lead to unintended outcomes. I also recently read an article that emphasized the importance of shorter sentences. We live in a world where we are inundated with stream of consciousness content and long-winded explanations. What our brains grasp is generally a very small piece of that. Keeping sentences short, and language accessible means that messaging is clearer.

By acknowledging the wide range of learning styles out there you are able to find that sweet spot where you use just the right mix of visuals, text, and other elements to make your message resonate. You want to keep it straightforward yet engaging enough to cater to everyone, from those who absorb information visually to those who dive into the written word. By targeting this balance, you ensure your content is not only accessible but also hits home for every kind of learner.

In being universal in design, you must consider how local your situation is as well. This means you should customize or tailor to suit the challenge you are looking to take care of.

One key thing when we talk about accessibility, inclusion, and universality, is language. I have yet to find material that was conceived from the start to be multilingual. At most, it is "localized", which is usually done by a 3rd party company that doesn't necessarily understand the knowledge domain (or even applies instructional design best practices). And when there is multimodal content (which should be part of every robust instructional design approach) it gets almost impossible to localize it after the original material was created. With the Internet, we live in a small world today, but universal learning is still limited by our language barriers. I hope we can change that with the use of AI.

There is unfortunately still very little research on the efficacy of UDL (learner outcomes), supporting its underpinnings in neuroscience. Remember alternatives, and even combine approaches! Engineering Design Process (EDP), Design Thinking, and Understanding By Design (UbD) are all solid methodologies as well.

Writing in plain language is a crucial but often overlooked aspect of making information accessible to a diverse audience. It becomes even more important when your audience’s first language is not English, especially when you are developing training materials for a government organization or a population of migrants from different countries.

Universal design is important.. this demonstrates that you're facilitating inclusivity and providing the necessary accomodations for all learners to be successful in their learning ... This is especially important for adult trainees

I work at a company where our products are constantly evolving so a "set it and forget it" approach to onboarding is just not feasible. We're constantly evaluating and improving. In our case, the trainers go "in market" with our new hires within a few months after they've completed onboarding training. This helps us to gauge how they are applying the training on the job. We also talk with their managers throughout the training process and afterwards. This not only helps us remediate our new hires' performance issues but it also enables us to spot gaps or shortcomings in our curriculum.

Do a thorough diagnostic and TNA..to help build a robust program that touches the very core of the need. Understanding the audience, their roles, their persona's as well in order to create a setting that builds curiosity, interest and participation.

Set goals for yourself with each project to upskill. Knowing where the field is going and how your role is changing, look for ways to innovate. Standard instructional design is changing rapidly with AI, and there is no "holding steady" anymore; not only improve learner experience, but focus on your own!
