What are the most important tips for AI consultants?

Keep your compass pointing north. We are not on a path to be the best at Ai. We are on a path to be the best at our domain of expertise. Ai provides tools to help us reach our destination. If you are a designer, learn the tools that apply to you, for your use cases. If you’re looking for guidance, seek domain experts that happen to use Ai, not Ai “experts” that dabble in your domain.

It’s important to keep up with the latest trends and practices in areas like machine learning or computer vision. For instance, in computer vision projects, understanding the right data, models, metrics, and addressing privacy and bias issues is crucial. This deep knowledge enables you to provide practical, client-specific solutions, ensuring that your advice is both relevant and valuable.

Being able to translate that domain into a language the customer can understand. A local business owner may not know what an LLM is but they certainly understand what saving 3 hours a day answering the same customer queries can do for them. Show them the benefits not the jargon.

As an AI consultant, deep domain knowledge and staying updated on developments are vital. Exceptional AI consultants bridge theory and practice, adapting solutions to a client's context. It's about hands-on experience, often lacking in many consultants.Theoretical AI knowledge is crucial, but the real value lies in understanding business dynamics. AI consultation requires a personal connect with the client. By which we mean to build a natural capacity to understand the client's need and plan your solutions to solve the problem. Do not be focused on the end result right from the beginning. Trust the process,be transparent with the process flow with the client, share inputs which will benefit the client on a long term instead of seeking only the best at the moment. Explain the duration, as a consultant you need to respect and value the client's time with a highest of degree. Being available to the client always may not help as its a sign of bad consultation. However bring in the relationship of time management of yours and the client expectations through a strategic approach.

I've seen many jump straight to AI solutions without full context. AI can't fix problems without understanding their nuances. This understanding is vital for creating solutions that actually work. My advice: always start by thoroughly understanding the client's specific situation. Ultimately, a deep grasp of the problem ensures the effectiveness of AI solutions.

Understanding the problem at hand is paramount. AI consultants need to delve beyond surface-level issues to grasp the underlying challenges and objectives of their clients. This deep understanding allows for the development of more effective AI solutions that are not just technically sound but also align perfectly with the client’s strategic goals.

Communication is the key for an AI consultant. An AI consultant should be able to make the client feel comfortable. Building trust is critical. Quite often the clients are from a different domain and they have limited understanding of AI. Hence at some point the client has to trust the AI consultant. Also it’s important to explain the technical concepts in non technical language to the client. Anologies and anecdotes often are helpful. Clear communication is also very helpful while giving talks in webinars/conferences, through which we build our credibility.

Connecting the dots for others is why we are here. We need to help them bridge the gap between what they know and what could be. With this in mind, we have to have knowledge of both sides to communicate effectively. Research and dive deep into the unknown knowledge your clients are looking for. Listen carefully to them and understand where they are and the knowledge they have at the moment. Connect the unknown with the known. Use metaphors, make it as relevant as possible to their use case.

After your meeting and learning the clients pain points, take a few days to think, how can you solve their problem best and most simply? Come back to the client within 2-5 days with a written one pager, show you understand their pain points, offer some free solutions they can do themselves as well as your expertise.

Use language and visuals that resonate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Listening to feedback and addressing concerns is just as important as conveying information. Always remember that the code that you write will impact a human in one way or another. When writing the code, how would you feel if it ran on your five-year-old child's data; if it makes you uncomfortable, rethink/design your code.

This is why setting up an AI Usage Policy is a must! Not only does it allow everyone in your organisation to express their views but it is an opportunity to discuss the ethical implications and ensure your organisation is living through your values.

I always keep myself open to learn new things. There are AI professionals who are part of my team, they know a specific topic better than me and I am comfortable to learn a couple of things from them. What’s important to grow in AI is the group/community you are in. We need to learn from each other to grow. More knowledgeable and knowledge hungry people in your group/community more will you grow. Also for people with experience, they should be willing to unlearn and learn better technique/approach. This requires a humble and flexible personality

The field of AI is rapidly evolving, so continuous learning is non-negotiable. AI consultants should regularly update their skills and knowledge. This could involve taking new courses on the latest AI frameworks or attending industry conferences. An AI consultant specializing in natural language processing (NLP), for instance, must stay abreast of the latest transformer models that could significantly impact language understanding.

AI consultants must recognize the era of constant digital transformation. Often, today's AI technologies surpass the knowledge of 25 consultants combined. As far as I know, I'm the only person doing some of the things I'm doing in the UX Design x Gen Ai. I'm frequently surprised by this, but I stay on top mainly by tuning out 90% of the noise about Ai on social media. I ignore anything about Ai that isn't existential to my core areas of focus. Ai evolves breathtakingly fast. I have to change my teaching content *every week*. Remember: There are no Domain + Ai experts. There are only Domain Experts that specialize in using Ai for their domain. I am a design expert who specializes in designing with Gen Ai. People hire me & depend on me to teach them cutting-edge Ai design domain techniques that they can *actually use*. I can't afford to get distracted by noise.

Specialising in a niche helps you become a go-to expert and stand out in the field. Developing strong analytical skills allows you to tackle complex problems effectively. Staying flexible and adapting to industry changes ensures you remain relevant and innovative. AI consultant should focus on understanding client’s needs. Quite often the client’s requirements are not fully formed. The AI consultant needs to use their experience to give clues and ask questions to client and make the requirements more clear. There is lot of discussions and hype about AI, there is lack of clarity of what’s feasible and what’s yet to turn feasible using AI. AI consultants have to explain the Art of Possible of AI. Also it’s important to explain the life cycle of the AI project and client’s role in it. The stakeholders play a very critical role wrt providing business context, help in getting access to data and drive adoption. Their role and time commitment needed for success of the project need to be explained.

Let me add "what not to do" in an AI consulting project for both clients and consultants. Unlike traditional software development, the outcomes of AI consulting projects are probabilistic. Secondly, to realize the full value, in many cases, iterative and innovative problem-solving is required. Instead - start with a "feasibility analysis". For example, whether a certain accuracy is achievable or not. This would give a better understanding to the client without spending a lot of money. The client pays only for the feasibility analysis before the project. This effort would allow consultants to accurately set targets and timelines. In turn, in the long run, the client gets a better value for their investment.
